1) Position Statement -How can people end different food addictions and what are the consequences?

2) Summary - There is an increase in physical inactivity due to the forms of work of nature increasing, for example: changing forces of transportation and the increasing of urbanization which is the concentration of human populations into discrete areas. This can lead to people not being able to move more and having less space and if you are not active enough, you do not use the energy provided by the food you eat, and the extra energy you consume is stored by the body as fat. A focus on healthy eating can become obsessive and develop into an eating disorder known as orthorexia, or orthorexia nervosa. Like other eating disorders, orthorexia can have severe consequences.

3) My action plan...The first possible way to reduce obesity is to reduce fat food or food with majority sugar, and whole grains.

1) Position Statement

Vape shops should not be banned near schools. Instead, there needs to be a $75 fine when a student is caught with a vape. This is better for targeting the harm of vapes.

2) Summary

In New Zealand, vaping is only recommended as a way to quit smoking. Youth vaping is becoming increasingly prevalent, with many choosing to vape despite being an R18 product and having never smoked (Vaping Facts, 2022). The latest results from the most recent 2022 ASH Year 10 Snapshot survey found that 10% of the 14 to 15-year-olds reported vaping every day; with higher rates among rangatahi Māori (22%) and Māori girls (25%). Daily vaping among those who have never smoked showed a small but significant increase from 3.1% in 2021 to 4.3% in 2022.

3) My action plan...Letter to Principal introducing money fine for kids vaping at school.

Dear Mrs Ofner,

I think what we need to do to prevent vaping in our school Ms Ofner is if a kid is caught using a vape their parents should get fined the same amount that vape costed, for example $75. The reason this fine is so high is because if kids have money it's from their parents (like in an allowance). In taking that money away when they're caught vaping they can't save for a new vape and it's on the parent to control the money. Another reason why the fine should be a lot is because it's so harmful not just to the kids vaping but to those around them. This is a really important policy to send home the message that vaping is a serious problem at school -do the parents want $75 dollars gone, or their child's voice gone?

Thank you for reading,

Ulucean

1) Position Statement - The NZ government should impose a 10% tax on all processed food to reduce the prevalence of heart disease and gather funds to assist with the cost of helping those already struggling with the disease.

2) Summary - Lack of education and awareness. People who purchase processed foods may consume more sugar, salt, and fat than is advised since they may not be aware of the amount of additives present in the food they are purchasing and consuming. Due to the substantial amounts of added sugar or fat that certain meals contain, they may also have more calories. The reason why people will purchase these types of foods is convenience. A study tracked over 105,000 participant’s eating habits for over five years. This would increase NZ tax by 23% but if the school being a school it might have people in the community willing to make donation agreements per year so this cost estimate might be less.

1) Position Statement - Clean drinking water is a human right and EVERY person should have access to safe water

2) Summary - There are several ways humans have contributed to the socio-scientific issue of access to clean water. For example, humans have contributed to pollution of waterways through dumping rubbish, littering, farming runoff and industrial waste just to name a few. This has lead to fewer clean drinking water sources around the world. A solution for this could be to educate people on how much pollution and litter we create in everyday life to try to reduce how much waste we produce. There should also be restrictions and penalties on the amount of pollution companies and farms are allowed to create to help stop ruining water sources, and generate money to help pay for water treatment plants. This could be challenging as it requires a big change, and industries are unwilling to do so if it costs them money. (Please note this is just one way humans are contributing and a potential solution for it, you can include as many as you have researched here).

3) My action plan was to create an educational poster which I then presented to my family, and printed several copies of to put in mailboxes and spread awareness. I have attached the photo of my poster above.

Posisition statment: New Zealand should continue to ban the use of nuclear power in Aotearoa.

Summary: People agree to banning nuclear energy because the facility's relatively high capital cost, lengthy building period, and reliance on fuel supply security are all factors. Furthermore, New Zealand now lacks the expertise and facilities required to support nuclear power reactors, which would have to be created.

Our opinion: We agree because, in New Zealand we don’t have enough facilities or the money to have nuclear power. While nuclear energy has its ups it also has its downs like, nuclear risks, cancer risks, accidents etc.

Reasons why: Nuclear power creates waste due to the material utilised, and there are concerns about potential mishaps or leaks, as uranium is not a renewable supply, at least not at the moment. New zealand are one of a coupls countries who have banned NE. (around 30%

According to experts, the primary argument is that nuclear energy is too large for New Zealand. A single nuclear power plant might provide enough energy to power one-seventh of the country. With hydropower currently providing 80% of the country's power, others believe this is excessive. Furthermore, if this power source were implemented and there was a power outage, one-seventh of the country would be without electricity.

The initial expense is another reason not to go nuclear. Building a nuclear power plant would need a significant initial investment in materials and knowledge, almost all of which would have to be imported. While it has been suggested that the significant one-time cost

Some action plan ideas are

A podcast about all the negatives about Nuclear Energy

A tik tok which will get views (our take on society)

Putting a post on Instagram or Facebook to get older viewers that can spread the word about our ideas

Posters around places like school or malls where there will be multiple people

Doing a petition to show how many people want this act

We made a tiktok explaining ways you could save energy around the house in order to avoid New Zealand having to unban Necular Energy.

1) Position Statement - New Zealand should stop registering cars that aren't electric.

2) Summary- Researchers show that electric vehicles are better for the environment. They produce less glasshouse gases and air pollutants than gasoline or diesel vehicles. This includes their output and electrical generation to keep them functioning. On the other hand, despite also having chemically stored energy, electric cars release it electrochemically without any kind of combustion, thanks to lithium-ion batteries. This means that there is no fuel being burned and therefore no air pollution through CO2 happening while driving. Around the world, governments are promoting Electrical vehicles as a key technology to curb oil use and fight climate change. General Motors has said it aims to stop selling new gasoline-powdered cars and light trucks by 2035. (source is You Matter and nytimes.)

3) My action plan was to make a video to educate people about electrical vehicles and their environmental benefits, which then i showed to family and friends.
