Research shows that in a group of 10 there are 7 of those who intends to post negatively and 6 out of 10 contains a slur.

The R-word is a term that is used to degrade people with "mental retardation", R-word stands for "retard", "retarded" or other derogative words used against people who suffer from IDD. With this issue, exclusion becomes rampant and nowadays it only gets worst because of the lack of Mental Health Awareness in our country. There is still an on-going campaign from the partnered NGO called, "Best Buddies Philippines" however the word has not been spread nationwide, lack of audience impact became a barrier to succeed in this campaign. 

Target Audience:

  • People with  intellectual or developmental disability, also called IDD.
  • Parents who have a child with an IDD.
  • Volunteers

Solution:

  • Social media campaign strategies that reveal who are truly affected by the said issue. This will serve as an eye-opener to the audience that could catch their interest in participating in other projects under this problem.
  • Make infographics to make it easier to understand what it means to have IDD in order for the target audience to spread awareness conveniently, soft and hard copies distributed will make dissemination easier as well.

With this in mind, 84% of teens use social media and 62% of them are using it every day according to research conducted by Common Sense Media.

Social media addiction is a condition wherein someone should be overly attached to social media, the overuse of these platforms can negatively impact the other aspects of their life. Yes, social media can help us be connected with our loved ones through a chat or video call away, it can also help us in having instant access to information, can also help us learn a new skill, and entertain us. But there is always the other side. The negative effects are FOMO or Fear of Missing out which leads to another effect is anxiety and depression, which also lowers self-esteem, which can also lead to disrupted sleeping patterns and decreased physical activity.

Solution
  • Create an infographic that is colorful and can be digested easily by the readers, meaning the information that will be put inside the infographic should be concise because the users of social media have only a decreased attention span of merely 8.25 seconds which is shorter than a goldfish of having an attention span of 9 seconds. The infographic will be filled with a short symptom checker if the reader is addicted to social media, or signs when one is addicted to social media. It will also be filled with factual text and facts based on research. And of course, ways how to decrease the use of social media and have an improved overall lifestyle.

In 2010, around 275 million metric tons of plastic waste was generated globally wherein 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons went into the ocean. The Philippines is among one of the highest trash collection rates in Southeast Asia, it has become and it has become the world’s 3rd largest source of marine plastic litter. 

Marine littering has greatly affected marine life and biodiversity and it also resulted with many climate changing hazards and localized flooding. The ocean is a source of our livelihood and is an important part of our world alongside its creatures. It is part of our duty to maintain it as best as we can, not further destroy it by our selfish and careless ways because it is and will negatively affect both us and marine life in the long run.

  • People who are knowledgeable in Marine life.

Solution:
  • Create a social media campaign or project that advocates awareness of the environmental impact of marine littering and help resolve this issue by clean ups and recycling from donations. A donation that is less anything less than Php 1000 would result in recycling waste, while anything more than Php 1000 donation would result in a volunteer clean up of up to 1 mile or more of  local beaches, lakes,rivers etc. 
  • Create visually appealing and informative posts that raise awareness of Marine pollution on social media to grab the viewer's attention.  Videos or video reels that details how we and marine life are affected can be used.
  • Create infographics about the project as well as ways that anyone can personally help with Marine pollution. Such examples could include, not littering and throwing the trash in the 3 waste segregation, recycling reusable items etc.

    What do you think are the Common misconceptions about mental health in the Philippines?
    • Mental health awareness is only reserved for the rich while the poor are ignored.

    • They agreed and claimed that people often misconstrue it with laziness and being overdramatic.

    • They claim that they don't hear it often.

    For the final section of the survey which is the Comments and Suggestions, we have received 4 responses while the rest had none to add. 3 responses wished for the awareness and improvement of mental health's especially towards the topic around people IDD. The other response was merely a suggestion with the layout of our survey.

    • "I wish that the R-word would be abolished along with its fellow derogatory terms."
    • "Spread more awareness on mental health, little by little let us teach people to be more conscious and understanding towards people with special needs."
