OI observation #1 Our team completed the first OI cycle. Our problem of practice was observing whether our students were able to effectively collaborate and were using strategies to make sure collaborative groups were working and being utilized effectively by students. We observed a lesson in Ms. Alvillar’s classroom and we collected data by tasks. Following are the observations by category: Language Useage, Questions about process, Roles, Results/Task, Environment

The students will be given roles in groups to make sure everyone has a job and can participate: Discussion Director, Word Master/Vocabulary, Evidence collector, Summarize/Presenter

After posting information on post-its, we then categorized them by on task behaviors and off task behaviors.

We looked at the behaviors and agree that students will continue working on collaborative groups for the next cycle.

We also looked at the surveys that students took on how they saw themselves working in groups and how they saw the group as a whole. The positive outcome was that the majority of students see collaboration as a good strategy to continue to use as a way of learning. We will continue to work on planning the next cycle of OI with collaboration as the focus. We also have used this topic as our PDP goals.

Students were not working collaboratively 39 out of 67 times as opposed to working collaboratively 28 out of 67. With this data we decided to continue
with our POP.

OI Observation # I OI observation OI data posted on Padlet. Today we decided the categories that each team member will be observing for OI observation. The categories are as follows: Collaborative Language, Inclusive/Exclusive, Roles, Environment and Task/ Results. On 1/10 our team decided what teachers are observing the different categories during OI observation. We will be recording this observation. On Thursday we will review our data.

We have taught students to effectively collaborate with peers in small group discussions using a multitude of strategies: expert groups, Google Classroom and Docs, defined roles and responsibilities and inclusion of all group members. Students understand that collaboration is an integral part of their continued learning. Through the use of collaboration and computer implementation, student engagement in all content areas has increased and has helped them to become effective learners and leaders as they continue their education. Teacher collaboration was a vital part in the implementation of our goal to teach collaboration effectively.
