Some causes could be genetic abnormalities, emotional stress, any trauma to brain or infection, problems/changes in the structure/shape of the muscles & bones that make speech sounds, damage to parts of the brain or the nerves (ex: cerebral palsy), hearing loss, GERD, cancer of the throat, cleft palate or other problems, conditions that damage the nerves in vocal cords, laryngeal webs, a birth defect, noncancerous growths, overuse of the vocal cords, etc. (pennmedicine.org)

If your child has SLI, you can avoid stressful social situations whenever possible, listen patiently to the child, make eye contact, don't interrupt, & show love & acceptance, avoid finishing sentences for them, set aside time for talking, & see a therapist for speech & language therapy. How I would work with one with SLI:

When having a student with SLI in the classroom, I would make efforts to let the child know that I am there to help them, without expressing too much concern on their disorder. I would make sure I can help them in social situations, allow them to finish their sentences before chiming in, & speak with their parent/guardian(s) on how we can provide the child with speech therapy, language therapy, counseling if needed, & how we can work together to make sure the child has the same opportunity in their education as their classmates. I would make sure the child and parent(s) know that my classroom is a safe space, & I would reassure them that I will make sure the child is seen equal to others, & dedicate either an area of the room to help the child, or extra time out school.
