The Instep Kick in Soccer

Justin Litterelle has held marketing and programming positions in the hospitality industry for more than a decade. Now the Director of Cultural Programming at Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, Justin Litterelle enjoys playing soccer in his free time.

Also known as the “laces” kick, the instep kick functions as one of soccer players’ most important techniques. It involves making contact with the ball using the top part of the foot, or instep, which for soccer players is the area of the foot underneath the laces of a cleat.

To perform an instep kick, the player runs directly toward the ball, then steps to the side with the supporting foot. This allows him or her to activate the working calf and lock the kicking ankle while the kicking leg itself swings forward.

This kick allows the player to take advantage of the strength of his or her quadriceps. Strength also comes from the rapid flexion-to-extension movement of the hip and knee joints. The player must have a high level of stability in the standing leg to take advantage of this power, just as accuracy of aim is important to the kick’s functionality as a passing or shooting technique.

Below are three beautiful, budget-friendly travel destinations.

1. Costa Rica - A country rich in biodiversity, Costa Rica comprises a wealth of national parks that cost no more than a few dollars to enter. Most parks allow for free, self-guided walks, which often result in encounters with wildlife such as monkeys, macaws, and tapirs. Additionally, an eight-hour bus ride and popular local dishes can cost as little as $10 and $2, respectively.

2. Ecuador - Airfare to this South American country is relatively inexpensive if departing from Florida on budget airlines such as TAME and jetBlue. The country offers surfing beach towns, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the famed hot springs of the volcanic Banos. For budget travelers, a week’s worth of groceries can be purchased at local markets for as little as $10.

3. Cambodia - Visitors to Cambodia can explore the Angkor Wat’s ancient ruins or visit one of the many picturesque beaches. Accommodation can be secured at a guesthouse for as little a few dollars a night, while taxi drivers can be hired for $20 for the entire day.
