Luke must dehumanize the cat in his mind, making the cat an "it" instead of a "her". This shows that the government has been able to desensitize one part of the population and dehumanize another, making the exploitation of women totally allowed, as they are no longer people, but objects. The cat, and pets in general, were the first to go, as if women weren't to be treated as people, then who cares about the pets? Luke, at this point, at least still viewed his wife as a person, but was able to sacrifice his feelings for the cat to save her. This also relates to how we have discussed the lack of women's rights with ISIS, and how ISIS does not view anyone who doesn't follow their radical beliefs as a human, but an object, an object that they can do whatever they want with.

Serena offers to Offred the ability to get with Nick in an attempt to have a baby, considering the Commander might not be able to have children himself. However, this is agains the law, and if Offred is caught, she could be sent to the colonies or killed. It is obvious that Serena wants Offred to have the baby for her own benefit. On one end, she might want Offred to have the baby so that she and the commander no longer can date, and that she is out of her life for a bit of time. But worse, it could be a trap to get her sent to the colonies, taking her out of her life for good. Serena should not be trusted. She has much more power than Offred, and can get her in trouble very quickly.

Men were tired of the lifestyle of sex without intimacy. Men were giving up on it, giving up on love and marriage. In that time, all that mattered was women, and men forgot what it meant to have a true relationship. In the new society, men like the Commander can't really love, they don't have someone they are close to, someone they could talk to, someone to be there lifelong partner. This blatant rejection of love goes against the human spirit, and while the men in this society may have unlimited influence, and can basically take advantage of any women they want, they can't love, they cant have relationships, and this leaves a large feeling of emptiness in the lives of men in this new society.

Janine thinks that the baby's problem was her fault, that two failed babies in a row was in her control somehow. Remember, those miscarriages were completely out of Janine's control. But she wanted to at least feel that there was some control in her life, in her events, that she had some story. In reality, what happened with the baby was out of her control, and, as Offred said, had "no plot". Remember as well, these women are raised so that they are perfectly obedient, that whatever happens is their fault, and their commanders are perfect. Fear keeps them in line, and no one is going to blame the powerful commanders for a failed baby, so the only one to blame is themselves.

In the days before the current society, women in free relationships with men often went badly awry. Husbands would exploit wives, beat them, use them for sex, abuse the children, and often leave them to fend for their own (often literally leaving them). Many women could not get into a stable relationship at all. Arranged marriages of the current time provided stability and safety of the wives. They could not be left, they could not be exploited, they did not have to worry about money and food like they did before. These safeties are what were given to them, in sacrifice of love. The question is which is more important, life or love? The truth is that in times long ago, long before this novel, one could have both.

Women were the only people that mattered, and marriage wasn't truly a factor. In the book, the commander doesn't really have love for anyone. He is not really close to anyone in particular. He doesn't even have sex with his wife. She is considered his wife, but they barely even intervene. Men really never have the ability to get real feelings and feel love.

Women never really had a suitable relationship with their husbands. True love was never really a thing. Instead, they didn't have to worry about many things. Working and making money wasn't really a concern for them. Safeties and priorities weren't really an issue to women.

Luke says “I’ll take care of it”, meaning that he will kill the cat (Atwood 192). Offred realizes Luke must turn the cat from a “her” to an “it” before killing the cat. Offred now understands that’s what you must do before and “then you make it real” (Atwood 193). Offred realizes that the Gilead leaders must have had to do the same thing before killing the President, Congress and many others in their way. They had to detach themselves from the situation. This event also gives Offred the insight that the Gilead government “force you to kill, within yourself” (Atwood 193). The Gilead leaders have succeeded by controlling the public through fear. This relates to other discussions we’ve had in class because the Gilead government is making the promise of safety enticing by imposing fear on the citizens. The idea of controlling people through fear has been repeated throughout history and is exemplified through propaganda.

Serena has a strong desire for a baby and she is willing to have Offred do this in order to get a child. Serena entices Offred by offering to get a picture of her daughter. I don’t think Serena should be trusted because Serena has never showed any form of kindness towards Offred. Serena also has a lot of power over Offred and does not put herself in danger by suggesting this to Offred. However, Offred has a lot to lose in this situation. If she is caught she could be sent away and punished. This could be a trap just to have Offred sent away, but if it is not Serena’s proposition shows how truly desperate she is for a child. Offred only accepts the offer because she is angry and desperate. Serena even rewards Offred with a cigarette after she accepts, showing that this is a game to her and it is not a genuine act of kindness because if it would she wouldn’t use bribes and rewards for Offred.

The Commander means that men felt insignificant and lost meaning in life with the feminist movement. The sudden shift in gender roles left men not knowing how to behave or act with no longer having to fill the role as guardian of women. The Commander also suggests that men became fearful of women’s power. He continues by saying that Gilead was established to put men back into their traditional roles as soldiers and strong figures to restore meaning to their life. While the Commander makes the creation of Gilead seem like a respectable attempt to bring purpose back into men’s life, it ultimately is not justified to take rights and civil liberties of people to bring one group of people to the top of society.

Janine believes that her baby turned out to be a “shedder” because the child was not her commander’s. Ofglen says that Janine conceived the doctors child. Janine believes that this is a just consequence for her action. This follows the “Just World Fallacy” because her wrong doing was followed by a “just” consequence. The Just World Fallacy states that people want to believe that life is fair and that only bad things happen to people who do bad things, and Janine uses this fallacy to explain why the baby is a monster. Offred believes that Janine uses this ideal to “decide the baby’s flaws were due to her own”, in order to prove to herself that her life has meaning (Atwood 215). Offred even states that “people will do anything rather admit that their lives have no meaning” (Atwood 215). Offred thinks Janine blames herself for her “shredder” child because it makes her feel that she has some sort of control over her own life, when in actuality people have no control of the randomness of life.

The Commander means that the structure of Gilead takes away women’s rights in order to enhance the quality of their life. He explains that in system that is currently set up, women don’t have to have to compare themselves to others, feel like they have to fit a certain beauty standard or deal with the pressure of finding a husband. Once the arranged marriage is in place, the Commander states that the society has eliminated the chance of an abusive relationship or a potential divorce. While Gilead ensures the safety of women in society, it comes at a cost, and in my opinion the loss of individual freedom is not worthy the guarantee of safety. I, therefore, disagree with the Commander’s argument because by taking away liberties from women to ensure safety, you are also taking away their happiness and individuality. His argument makes sense from his point of view because the society favors males. However, I think if roles were reversed and if he was handmaid, he would have a different stance.

AJ Wingfield Janine uses the "Just World Fallacy" as she blames herself for something that was not her fault. Janine's baby simply did not come out okay, and she blames herself, even if the people who ruined her baby was everyone but her. Women. especially the wives blame themselves and are blamed for everything, even if clearly out of their control.

Women had the oppertunity to provide for themselves and do what they wanted to a point where men started feeling useless and angered. I think this reasoning is unjust and simply not right because men didn't have to feel "lesser" than women, they just had to feel equal to them in the sense that they both had freedom to do what they wanted. Now with women having all of their rights and dignity taken away to make men feel better, society is torn apart and not justified at all no matter how the Commander puts it.

They have simply taken away the choice and as a result this "issue" has gone away. This heavily realates to the ideas of "freedom to" and "freedom from". He believe that "freedom from" is better and as a result believes he has given more. I heavily disagree with this argument because people should have the freedom to do whatever they want.
Luke is forced to call their cat "it" so that he does not have an emotional connection to it.
