The Just World Fallacy states that people want to believe that life is fair and that only bad things happen to people who do bad things, and Janine uses this fallacy to explain why the baby is a monster. Offred believes that Janine uses this ideal to “decide the baby’s flaws were due to her own”, in order to prove to herself that her life has meaning (Atwood 215). Offred even states that “people will do anything rather admit that their lives have no meaning” (Atwood 215).
