Payton Farquhar is being executed because he was trespassing on a bridge where the union soldiers were stationed. He was trying to kill a sergeant because he was tipped off by a spy.

One thing that is absurd in the story is that a union spy told a plantation owner about the bridge.I think this because why would they target someone that isn't even causing major problems. Another thing that is absurd is that they are being very dignified while they are executing him. He was a random civilian about to kill a sergeant. I think another weird thing that is happening is that he cannot seem to control his hands even though he is aware of what is happening. Also that he can see every little thing in the forest. He also got shot in the collar bone and to him it just felt warm. A pink light shone through the woods.
