I enjoy both nature and prehistoric life in general. Connecting this to the Arts Integration, the final reading on the final class touched me in a special way due to the emphasis on reconnecting with the earth and reconnecting with yourself (at least to me). Thus, this collage tells me about my love for nature, and emphasizes empathy for reptiles and all animals. In my personal life, my family hasn't really been the most supportive of the fact that I loved reptiles, amphibians, fish and other non-mammalian life (as they say that those aren't 'real' or 'lovable' animals). For this group, I can envision that an interdisciplinary capstone project might focus on connecting topics together and maybe focus on historical contexts. One of the ideas I am having is on looking into historical records and facts of demographic oppression, take note of how the ideas that are part of academic curriculum have been used to justify or even create arguments in favor of repressing minoritized demographics and develop arguments and strategies for unlinking these supremacist ideals to better replace such ideals with much more culturally sustaining practices. The point of my capstone project would be to try and help build community within the school with students of different demographics.
One of the main things I took away from Kimberly’s presentation was the form of teacher/community/group support and student outreach in the student capstone project, which I noted in how Kimberly stated how her teacher’s reaction after the destruction of her bathroom menstruation kit helped encourage her. This lets me know that there is an important element of a teacher providing emotional and professional support.
