4 out of 5 stars
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a great book. It appeals to the emotions and causes its reader to self-reflect. It would be a great book to use in the classroom for multiple reason. For example, students can benefit from the innocence of Bruno and Shumal during a time in history that was so awful. Although this book is set during WWII there are certain details that are not factual to the history of WWII.

3 out 5 stars
My Brother Sam is Dead is an easy read with a great plot. The story tells about a family that is torn between supporting the British or the revolutionist during the Revolutionary War. The impact to the reader is profound in this story. The emotions that are portrayed Tim, Sam, and their family really tugs at the heart. It would be a great addition to the classroom because it has adventure and excitement. It is a little slow (boring) in the beginning but continue on and it really catches the readers attention.

The Rough-Face Girl by Rafa Martin

5 out of 5 stars
The Rough-Face Girl is an Algonquin Indian folktale similar to Cinderella. The Rough-Face girl is treated badly by her older sisters and is made to tend to the fire on a daily basis. The fire has charred her hair and caused burn marks to her face and hands. She remains kind and loving though she is treated badly. The Invisible man sees how the Rough-Face girl's sisters treat her and decides she is worthy of marriage. This interesting spin on the classic Cinderella story is engaging and fun. The author uses plenty of adjectives to paint the scene for the story. The illustrations are dark and gloomy when they refer to the Rough-Face girl but eventually brighten up when she marries the Invisible man. A great tale of kindness overcoming hurtfulness. This is a great story to have in the classroom. Great way to teach kindness. This story really appeals to the emotions of students. The reader really gets a sense of what the Rough-Face girl is experiencing throughout the story. I love this book.
