With the mita, instead of paying taxes, Incas had to work for the government like slaves. Most Incas worked the fields, growing lots of crops including peanuts and maize in "valleys, where the climate was warm" (p.425, World History: Medieval to Early Modern Times). No merchants or market people existed in the economy of the Incas. Few products were claimed to be key to the Incas, but those "upshots" could not be produced locally. In these cases where the Incas did not have a supply of those products, they used many different strategies to try and get their hands on resources. They canceled long-distance trade and made colonies in different places of harvest. The making, distribution, and use of resources were now centrally controlled by the Inca government. Using all of this, they managed to survive without money and become wealthy and powerful. The Inca people got all their necessities at no cost to themselves, only them working. There was nowhere to trade and spend their money, so they established trade with outsiders - not among themselves.
