I think there's a difference in the applications of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture. To start, biotechnology is expected to modify crops in order to create the necessary resistant to their environment in terms of weather and pesticides. The big deal is when those are eaten and may create strong and unbeatable diseases that medicine cannot fight with.

I think that it is likely that there will be a lack of some crops in the future. Companies will focus on the production of only some products which ensure a good production with the best charateristics. So the other crops will not be cultivated that much.

I do think religious beliefs have a role or in some way influence our perception on GE. This is not necessarily a bad or good thing, it's just part of how we see the world. If we took out these perceptions (religious and ethical values) GE will have no limitations in the future and might leads us to what the sci-fi movies portray of a futuristic society.

I think that there are differences between the use of biotechnology in these two aspects. Or maybe it is my perception, and it is that many people think this way because we have always related technology to medicine, and agriculture has always been a relatively natural process.
