Because we have more time in class in a block schedule environment, it can be very effective to have students move around and work with one another so that they can have collaborative conversations and develop the skills learned in class together. CHAMPS is an effective way to facilitate these types of activities.

The most challenge thing for me is how to engage in more Structured Teaching when I have only one or two students per grade/subject but have 4 different grade levels in class at once. It's great when I am only concerned about a specific skill that can apply across the curriculum but much harder when trying to explore congruent angles at the same time I am teaching Graphing Exponential Functions. Especially frustrating that the students don't have the same opportunity to collaborate as their non-disabled peers

I feel like the CHAMPs method will have a positive effect on block scheduling. Students can participate in conversations after they complete work to discuss more ideas on topic which can stretch the depth of lesson plans. Moving around the classroom into stations or projected tasks can also add value to lesson plans and keep the students attention elevated. Signals help to bring back focus and attention in a quiet way.

I am hoping with block scheduling, that pre and post reading thinking will be much more effective and frequent for students, because there will be more time. Students will be able to read something and annotate, then think without having to be rush or having to break this up over days. Therefore, they will engage more with reading and not struggle so much with just remembering what an article or story is about, which will likely lead to more and deeper thinking.

I am looking forward to block schedule to actually finish a lesson from the input to the application level and beyond. When students are exposed to a variety of instructional strategies one of them is prone to succeed with more time at hand, I think it would a lot easier to manage and not rushing everything through particularly when labs are involved. Assembling, dissembling, cleaning etc...

Formative assessments are great tool to use in a block schedule. Since we have more time, you can assess and group at the end of one class and implement differentiated instruction during the next class. The key to formative assessments working is anticipating student misunderstandings and preparing for them ahead of time.

In a block schedule students will know your expectations as a teacher. I can simply add CHAMPS to my daily Powerpoint display and having it visible during the class period eliminates repeated instruction and reminding of classroom norms.

Block scheduling is going to involve a lot more transition in activities and seating throughout a given activity/lesson. There will be a lot more variety in grouping and movement according to formative assessments in a given period or lesson. With block scheduling there will be more time for activities and for students to metacognitively assess their learning and help to fill in the gaps of their peers.

I currently use whiteboards for formative assessment and will continue to do so next year. I have found it a valuable tool to assess student learning at various stages of the lesson. I plan to use this tool to place students in pairs to encourage collaboration and peer tutoring that will lead to greater understanding. Like many of my colleagues, I'm concerned about the loss of teaching time, but I am hopeful that some class time will be gained with students not changing classes 6 times a day.

I am looking forward to being able to move through the GRR strategies all the way through in one class. I feel like the "I do" (heavily guided instruction) and "We do" parts of the GRR lessons take a lot of time, especially if you are actively using formative assessments to guide teaching and reteaching when needed. I am looking forward to moving more into the "I do" portion of GRR immediately after instruction has taken place instead of always having to send that home for homework.

I currently mainly use white boards as a tool for formative assessment. They are a great tool for the you do it together or the you do it alone portion of the lesson. With the block schedule, using the whiteboards, and other formative assessment strategies, will be easier to implement because we will have more wiggle room in a single class period to work with.
