Evolution of Heavyweight Champs’ Bodies

The look of men’s bodies in boxing has changed significantly over the decades in boxing. In the 50’s we got the American-Italian Rocky Marciano as the heavyweight champion of the world. Marciano was known for being a man’s man, blue collared and mostly always an underdog. Marciano stood at only 180cm and weighted 85kg. Whilst with a fairly-normal body he still won all his fights retiring 49-0 with 43 knockouts. But nowadays there is a pressure for men to get big muscles, particularly in the chest and shoulder area's (Richardson, Niall, and Locks 2014, 37 )Anthony Joshua, a current heavyweight champion, looks like he is twice the size of Marciano standing at 198cm and weighing 113kg. Joshua’s body makes him appear as if he is a body builder rather than an athlete. He has an aura of invincibility around him with his 21 wins, no loses and 20 knockouts. Joshua has the physical advantage some people are just born having. Men like Marciano are relatable though when Joshua is more like a superhuman. Boxing in the 50’s gave men hope, thinking if a normal man can get by on pure heart and tenacity he can make it.

What Peak Physical Performance Looks Like

Earlier in the year the UFC’s light-heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier took on the heavyweight champion of the world and came out on-top becoming the second every simultaneous dual title holder. Connell (1995, 54) tells us that success in sports gives men a high position in the social hierarchy as it symbolizes superiority and right to rule. Because of this men with all kinds of bodies can prove their masculinity. Many over the years have criticised DC’s body as he has a very large frame that is more wide than tall. DC’s ribcage is thick and when he is fighting the light-heavyweight division you can see his ribs give his body a shape that would never be one to be featured in modelling magazines. While men desire to have bodies that cannot be achieved without steroids (Richardson, Niall, and Locks 2014, 38), DC show's us that this action figure body-type is not needed especially after moving to the heavyweight division where DC’s body is even less desirable as he packs on the weight that his body naturally holds. What we can see clearly though his 21-1 record is that this body is not a disadvantage for his style that encompasses wrestling and dirty boxing. This thick body type could very well be what peak physical performance looks like and it cannot be argued that anyone other than DC is the pound for pound number 1 fighter in the world right now.
