The quote demonstrates the fear that Louisa has relating to marriage. This is due to Joe tracking her every move when he is home, which proves that he does not understand her independence and the joy that things being in order brings Louisa. From her point of view, femininity is shown through having the ability to reject the marriage and develop her own self-identity. During the nineteenth century, women had a "limited place" (Daniel). Nonetheless, during this era, it was essential for women to create their own space as a means of personal fulfillment, in order to get away from the chaos of toxic masculinity.

This is the first time where Louisa's sewing items are related to her femininity. She very strongly associates to them to the point where they have became a part of her identity. It is clear that she uses the sewing items as a way to escape the masculinity and create her own sense of femininity. Women make their places reflect their personality and their self-definition, which in turn affirms their femininity (Daniel).

Freeman is commenting on the struggles of being a woman during the nineteenth century and the responsibilities that they had. This short story is reflecting on the role that feminism play on gender norms during this time period and the role that a female has in society. She uses this story to illustrate how feminism can allow people to emerge as stronger characters in the end, and uncover from the restrictive stereotypes that once held them down (Daniel).
