Over in a small rural village, many people would gather every year, participating in a lottery that ends with a harsh stoning of one person chosen in the village. With this, the people of the village feel as though it is normal, even with them knowing about the terrible things to come. Throughout this story it becomes very clear that the central theme of “The Lottery” is the danger and harm that comes when following a tradition with no questions or wonders. As the story goes on the author shows us the danger and harm with the way the villagers, especially how they prepare and go through with these rituals done by their elders from many generations before them. The black box was a big part of the lottery and their traditions, making it hard for them to fight against it and replace it, scared for what could happen. Overall, this story shows how dangerous it can be to follow traditions because it has been passed down in history, forcing people to question and examine these traditions for the safety of our health.

Tessie Hutchinson rushed down the path to the village square, her heart racing as she realized she almost forgot about the lottery. The sun shone brightly, making everything look cheerful, but all she felt was a chill creeping up her back. “I totally forgot what day it was!” she said to Mrs. Delacroix as she slipped into the crowd, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling in her stomach.

As she found her family, Tessie noticed Bill standing near the front, his face hard to read. A knot tightened in her stomach. The lottery always made her anxious but today felt different. There was something heavy in the air a tension that made her skin prickle. People around her were laughing, but it sounded forced, like they were trying to make themselves believe this was just another normal day.

Mr. Summers’ voice broke through her thoughts as he started the lottery. Tessie watched him with a mix of worry and irritation. Why did it always have to be him? She looked over at the old black box, worn and splintered and it felt more threatening than ever. The villagers gathered around their faces familiar yet unrecognizable. She felt so alone in the crowd.

When Mr. Summers called out names, Tessie felt her heart race. “Dunbar,” he said, and she watched Mrs. Dunbar step forward. The lottery was supposed to be a game, but Tessie couldn’t shake the feeling that it was something much darker. She followed the names being called, each one a reminder that they were part of a tradition that bound them all together but also threatened to tear them apart.

Finally, it was her family’s turn. “Get up there, Bill,” she urged, her voice sounding louder than she intended. The laughter around her felt empty as she clenched her fists, wishing she could somehow control what was happening. They drew slips, and the crowd held its breath, each moment stretching painfully long.

Then came the moment she feared. “It’s Tessie,” Mr. Summers said, his voice barely above a whisper. The world around her spun as disbelief washed over her. “No, no, this isn’t fair!” she shouted, desperation clawing at her throat. The familiar faces of her neighbors suddenly felt strange, and she was terrified and alone.

“Shut up, Tessie,” Bill said, his voice strained. The words stung more than she expected. She wanted to scream that everyone had seen how rushed the drawing was, that it wasn’t fair, but the words wouldn’t come out. The crowd began to move, and she felt like the ground was shifting beneath her.

“It isn’t fair,” she cried, trying to make her voice heard over everyone else. Panic surged as stones were gathered, laughter replaced by a chilling silence. They were coming for her, the very people she had known her whole life, and she couldn't believe how quickly everything had turned.

Desperation fueled her as she held out her hands, pleading for someone to listen. But they were lost in the ritual, and as the first stone hit her, she realized that tradition mattered more than compassion. In that moment, Tessie understood the true horror of their unyielding customs.

"The Archer" by Taylor Swift

Explanation:

"The Archer" fits well with "The Lottery" because it explores deep emotions and struggles. The song talks about feeling vulnerable and unsure, which matches how the characters feel as they take part in the scary lottery. They know it’s wrong but can’t speak up, similar to the feelings expressed in the song. The overall mood of the song really captures the unsettling vibe of the story.

Why It Fits:

Taylor Swift's focus on fear and self-doubt in "The Archer" connects with the townspeople's inner conflicts. They join in the lottery knowing it’s not right, creating feelings of unease. This struggle between what society expects and what’s morally right is a big theme in both the song and the story.

Quote and Connection:

A powerful lyric from the song is, "I've been the archer, I've been the prey." This relates to the villagers in the lottery, who are both participants in and victims of a cruel tradition. It shows how people can feel trapped in a situation where they have to go along with something terrible, just like the characters in the story.
