They were one of the earliest civilization on earth , located in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia emerging during the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Ages between the sixth and fifth millennium BC. Sumerian farmers grew an abundance of grain and other crops, a surplus which enabled them to form urban settlements. The world's earliest known texts come from the Sumerian cities of Uruk and Jemdet Nasr , and date to between c. 3350 – c. 2500 BC, following a period around c. 4000 – c. 2500 BC ,but is believed their past is older,somewhere around 6000 BC.

The Sumerians origins is mysterious with many not knowing who the sumerians really were and how they formed a civilization. The sumerian race is quite unknown ,and their language doesn't has no known relatives,making modern people believing they were aliens.Some clay tablets had a detailed map of the solar steam,people with tails and the double helix of the dna making the theory than they were aliens more believable .Their origins is a mystery that may never me solved .

The Sumerians are known for creating the first system of writing ,the beer which they used to drink daily and use in rituals, the modern calendar, time (one minute being 60 seconds and one hour being 60 minutes) they developed irrigation system for farming ,the wheel and the alphabet ,which is believed this knowledge was given to them. In tablets they were depicted wearing watches on their wrist ,carrying handbags and bracelets. It does seem our first civilization was one of the most advanced ones.

The Sumerian religion and their rituals

They believed in anthropomorhic polytheism or of many Gods . According to Sumerian mythology the Anunnaki or the "The Astronaut Gods" were a group of deities(divine status/gods) who came to earth from the heavens,said to taught the sumerians everything from agriculture to writing . Regardless of their true nature ,the Anunnaki continue to fascinate people ,their alleged influence on the sumerians and human history it's still studied and debated today.

For their Gods they sacrificed animals, held festivals, and constructed temples called ziggurats .

Sumerian agriculture

They just throw their seeds in the fields and they grow. The presence of large mammals also contributed to the successful agriculture. Oxen, which were attached to plows, helped the farmers to till the land. They were also able to domesticate pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle. Donkeys, meanwhile, were attached to carts and helped farmers to transport the crops.

They made canals, dikes, and ditches to ensure that their crops have enough water. When the flood season of the rivers is over, the farmers drain excess water through canals.

Afterwards, they plow the fields and rake it repeatedly. The Sumerians planted in spring and by fall, they begin to harvest. They developed tools such as pickaxes, wagons, and sleds to help them in the process.
