Predominantly an enclave of Indian "money lenders" or chettiars, the street was lined with shophouses out of which these money lenders operated. 
-Apart from the Indians, the street was home to many Hokkiens who worked out of these shophouses. Many Hokkiens still continue to work along this street today as importers, exporters and commissioning agents along this street
-In 1858, the municipal had decided against renaming Market Street as Crawfurd Street, to avoid confusion with an other street that was named as Crawfurd Street in Lavender in the same year.
