Familiarize yourself with the IB leadership intelligences by reading the IB leadership pathway think-piece available in the Resource library.

Reflect on the following questions:
Which IB leadership intelligence resonates with you? Give an example.
Which IB leadership intelligence remains a challenge for you? Give an example.

Post your reflections in the appropriate columns in the IB leadership intelligences Padlet.

Using the commenting features within the Padlet, reply to at least one other colleague by offering a possible strategy to overcome the challenge they outlined.

Strength- FrancescaThe relational intelligence is one of my biggest strengths. I think I am strong in emotional intelligence and understand others thanks to empathy. I like working with others and I understand their emotions. I also like to promote and build the leadership capacity of others, looking at their profiles and helping them to grow.

Growth- FrancescaI have been working with the pedagogical team in my school and I have been personally involved in designing new policies. I think that one of the hardest things with this intelligence is to share the love for professional learning. I think I do have expert knowledge about contemporary teaching and learning practices, especially for what concerns my subject area. I will need to broaden my knowledge from next year.

Learning point- FrancescaI think I need to work on my reflective skills. I am quite strict when it comes to self evaluation but I think that as leaders we should learn to give ourselves some credit in order to evaluate from a different perspectives also situations when no one is with us. I will be able to do this with professional learning activities and counting on a supportive and honest leadership team.

I love collaborative strategic planning, particularly when working towards a resolution that will help others. For this reason, the strategic leadership intelligence resonated with me the most. One example of this currently occurring within my department is my attempt to have the school hire a music assistant for the secondary music teacher. It is evident to me that this not only benefits the teacher but our entire arts team. In my initial verbal request I was turned down due to set budgets for the next academic year. I am now in the process of creating a proposal collaboratively with the music teacher that outlines seven different possibilities to assist the secondary music teacher knowing full well the first four options will be overlooked for next year due to funding. I think it is important for upper administration to see that I have looked at this problem from many angles and to make them aware that the music department is willing to accept a temporary solution for next year with the goal of having a full time assistant the following year. This proposal includes job descriptions that the music teacher and I created outlining the importance of this assistance. I think it is valuable for the upper administration who are making monetary decisions to be made aware of the day to day impact this position has on our music program. I enjoyed the process of creating this proposal, creating many possibilities towards a solution, considering the perspective of upper management and thinking about this proposal in the long term.

I have to admit that this is one of the hardest aspects of Leadership Intelligence because from my point of view it it relies on a lot of practice. I find that I am calm, cool, and collected but often do not articulate my decision making rationale well to stakeholders who are not concerned with the educational side of our school, but only the business side. It is hard for me to accept a decision that directly effects the success of our students. I know that I need practice and a mentor that can help guide me through these sorts of challenges.

I feel like when I was doing the reading and the audit of my own leadership strengths, that this one was an easy fit for me. I like being liked, and very much want the teams I work with to feel valued, supported and that I am working as hard (if not harder) than they are to help them. I feel more like the servant of the teachers sometimes, but also the rock holding them together who they know they can come back to for safety and assurance.

Yeah this one is a challenge for me, because... I certainly am good at making decisions on the fly, but less good at making GOOD decisions on the fly. I feel like I might be being critical of myself, though I also have plenty of examples where I was far too keen to implement a cool new pedagogical approach etc, and forced it/ encouraged it with a team of teachers, only to then drop it quickly because I didn't plan it well and see it through. This is something I want very much to improve. Would love advice.

Strength- As an extrovert sanguine person I love people. I believe relationships are important and without good relationships very little can be achieved over a long period of time. I have worked hard at establishing a good relationship with the school stakeholders. I sometimes feel like an agony aunt listening to people's problems and struggles, but I realise the need for people to be heard. I think that a relational leader has achieved leadership than just ascribed leadership.

It was only when reading this definition of intelligence that I realised that I had in cultural leadership mindset. Being in an international school with about 30 different nationalities I enjoy linking my students to the local cultural context we are in. My travels and life experiences have helped me adapt to various cultures and communities. As a young person I always thought I would struggle to learn a new language, but I am proud to say that I now speak 4 languages! It was my desire to connect with the communities that led me to learn these languages.

Challenge-I think this is definitely one of my biggest challenges. I dislike working under pressure. It makes me lose sight of the forest for the trees! I have never yet lost my calm, but wish I could withdraw, not deal with the issues and hope they would go away! I am thankful for great mentors and encouragers who help me gain perspective and help me go back and face those issues. I must honestly say that this is something I need working on to build my resolve and resilience.

Strength- Working at a small school and starting it from the beginning, I met with our head of school weekly and was privy to many of the decision making processes. When this HoS left, we had a series of temporary HoS and a lot of the decision making was left to the teachers. Those experiences gave me the balcony view and while still coordinating and facilitating implementation. In addition the school I am at currently, focuses on 2-3 school improvement goals over 2 years. All teams are designed around these goals and we write theories of action for our teams. Also, as a union delegate for 6 years, I listened and witnessed so many perspectives and stakeholder reactions and decision making.

Challenge- I am constantly on a journey of self reflection for cultural intelligence. I am new to my school and our students speak over 60 languages and there are so many countries and cultures represented. I am really working on recognizing implicit bias, the social and cultural structures that influence decision making and voices that are listened to.
