Personal Philosophy of School CCounseling

My selected choice is K-2nd grade in the primary group. I believe that all students have the ability to succeed in reaching their goals, as long as they have the mindset for it. The proper mindset can go along way when trying to accomplish goals. Those who are unmotivated will have a harder time in trying to reach their goals, than the students who are motivated. Another thing I believe is that students really need a good support system in their life, without it, students can be discouraged and unmotivated to succeed in reaching goals.

I believe that the advocating role of school counselors is to advocate for each student as if they were your own child. Most parents will want their child to succeed in life and do anything possible to see it happen or give them an advantage they didn't have growing up. However, there are some parents who do not wish to see their student succeed and will not advocate for the help their child needs. As a school counselor, it should not matter who the child is or what their concern is, we should be advocating on the behalf of that student. At the end of the day, even if the student doesn't have a parent advocating for them, the student will at least have a school counselor in their corner trying to get them the help they need.

A school counseling program I would like to implement would be dual focused. Firstly, a part of the program would be based on teachers and their needs as a critical person in the school. I would have frequent check-ins with teachers (based on how often they desire) to see where their head space is and what could use improvements. This check-in will also be a time for them to share concerns about any student's they have on an academic and behavioral level. The other focus, which I consider to be just as important, is directed towards the students. This program will be uplifting and supportive of students and their needs. It will be advocating for each student no matter what.

My vision statement is:

Every student is deserving of having an advocate who will fight for the help they need to succeed like their peers. Also, every student is capable of great success when they truly want to succeed.

Lesson Plan

The goal of this lesson plan is to give the children, grades K- 2nd, the skills needed to be successful in school. This will be good for their ages because it gives them the knowledge on how to be success at a young age, so they are not having to wait until they are older to get these skills. However, a struggle with trying to implement this lesson plan for such a young age group would be trying to get them to understand the importance of succeeding in school. Some might understand why they are there, but not why it is important for them to do well. Another challenge would be getting the wording of this lesson plan appropriate for each grade level. Even though this lesson plan was made for Kindergarten, children in the second grade may think it is too childish for them. The lesson plan would not just need to change the wording for each grade, but also slightly change (or increase the number of) the skills introduced to the students.
