Celebrity Padlet by Alexander Sanders

Please respond to the prompt. Please put your name on the Padlet entry and respond in a paragraph. Public scandals are America's favorite parlor sport. Learning about the flaws and misdeeds of the rich and famous seems to satisfy our egalitarian yearnings. Egalitarian: the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. Explain the quote in your own words. Do you agree with the quote’s commentary on the American public? Why or why not? Are celebrities more likely than other people to go through turmoil? Why have so many celebrities appeared “good” in the public eye, but have regressed to appear “evil” and victims of public scandal?

People in America love to entertain themselves with the scandals of the lives of celebrities. This is justified by the public because even people who are usually placed on a pedestal can be scrutinized and criticized. Although more often than not, these people are praised, they certainly are looked at in a much harsher eye than necessary. Everyone makes mistakes and being on such a stage at all times comes with a lot of pressure. This can make them more susceptible to making mistakes as well.

I agree with the quote's commentary on the public because some of our biggest stars that we tend to look up to are getting caught doing something massive and scandalous. These famous people inspire us, and one could even argue that their ideas innovate us. Celebrities are more likely than other people to go through turmoil due to the fact that they're more famous and that they are much more well known than the average person. Many celebrities appeared "good" in the public eye, but have since been regressed as "evil" and victims of public scandal because they keep it a secret for a long time and then it all unravels for them once multiple people starting accusing him/her of doing such an act.

I agree with the quotes commentary, People are fascinated on celebrities lives and what they do on a day to day. People have jobs that literally follow celebrities around town and take photos of them and get nosey in there personal life and ask them personal questions. If a celebrity does some thing bad the public eye will only remember that celebrity in a bad way and ignore the good they have done. If a celebrity makes one slip by saying or doing something people will go after that person.

Yes, I agree with the quotes commentary on the American Public. I agree because you always see main headlines about celebrities getting caught doing the wrong thing and the news explodes. They are more likely to get caught than anyone else because the are always being watched by people and when they get caught they get a bad reputation. They appear "good" in the public eye because they have so much money and famously that they can usually just get out of any trouble and people forget will always forget about it because a new headline appears and they re focus on the new one and forget about the past news.

So many celebrities have appeared as good but the public eye views them as evil because most of the time, the celebrities are just doing "good" things to get attention or make themselves look better instead of actually meaning that they're doing.

The people of America love to see celebrities at fault because it makes them seem equal to the rest of us. I do agree with the quote's commentary on the American public because we do love to see stories about scandals because they are interesting. We are almost always more interested in bad things than good things in the media. I do think that celebrities are more likely then other people to go through turmoil because their lives are constantly being watched closely by the news and photographers. Their lives are not private, they are very public, so the second they do something scandalous it is immediately spread all over the country and even the world. Also, since their lives are extremely public, everything they do is examined very closely. For some people, something "good" they do could be seen as "bad" and before they know it, it's spread everywhere.

I agree that the quote represents the majority of American citizens on celebrities' public scandals. The quote elaborates on how the majority of American citizens get a sort of satisfaction out of witnessing those above them, from a societal and monetary perspective, fall from "power". In the majority of these cases, the celebrities fall due to public scandals. Celebrities are significantly more likely than other people to go through turmoil due to their reputation and widespread distribution throughout the world. For example, if average, everyday, Joe messes up, his community will get on him for it but a large amount of the time things will blow over. On the contrary, celebrities have to deal with this around every corner of the planet. Since they are such a buzz, the topic never seems to blow over as its on everyones minds. This results in more turmoil for celebrities.

Celebrities, just like normal people, experience turmoil. Their business is just exploited and put into magazines and every form of social media.

This quote tells how the American people like to watch celebrities' every move, and how every good deed or mistake immediately defines them. Personally, I agree with this quote. Americans as a whole like to magnify everything a famous, or rich, person does. When they do something good, we glorify them. Treat them like gods. They become the exemplary beings of life. And, when they do something bad, we look down on them like they are the scum of the earth. Like we do not make mistakes as well. This is mostly due to the fact that they are always in the public eye, and their every decision is shoved down our throats. So, yes, I agree with this quote, because we are given their life, choice-by-choice, and have to decide how we define them just because of this one moment.

I agree with the quote because the speaker says that it satisfies our egalitarian yearnings. This is true because in America, celebrities are often viewed as being on a higher tier than the rest of the citizens. Scandals are a way for us to criticize celebrities and see that they make mistakes just like everyone else does. Their social crises remind citizens that they are just as vulnerable as any other human. Celebrities only go through turmoil more than people who are not famous because their mistakes are exposed on a national level. One average citizen and one celebrity could commit the same federal crime but the celebrity would have a worse time only due to the fact that everyone would know about it. Celebrities appear good to the public eye because people think so highly of them, due to their career or maybe even contributions to their community. Then once that image is tarnished with a scandal, nobody looks at that person the same anymore.

Many people, not just Americans, enjoy gossip and scandal. At the same time, there are many people, including Americans, who don't read into it or aren't interested. The quote seems too gloss over this fact, which I don't agree with. Sometimes it is just a way to pass time, or its more interesting than what is going on at the time. The same events that we hear about celebrities happen to everyone, but people hear about celebrity scandal because they are famous. Celebrities don't get as much privacy as normal people; their lives are broadcast for everyone to see, and this means that its really hard to keep a secret. Recently there have been many claims against celebrities for scandal or assault, among other things. As more victims see people like them speaking up, they too will stand up. This is causing a domino effect, and many once "pure" or good celebrities are now being viewed as evil because of these accusations. Its not that they were good and became evil, or vice versa, it really is that we couldn't see who they were all along.

The scintillating nature of modern scandals comes from the idea that celebrities, wealthier and prettier and more powerful than the average person, often have sides that they hide from the public. Many Americans make a sport of sex scandals and celebrities' marriages, as if it was their business, and the personal sense of freedom of those celebrities are stripped away. Criticizing an actress on Facebook for her divorce certainly doesn't make one any better than her, and besides, that's her personal battle, and likely doesn't need people who know nothing about her telling her how she's failed. Of course, there is another side, when a person of influence and wealth abuses their power for sexual, financial, or other forms of exploitation. The way that society handles these genuine horrors and abuses are very much akin to how they handle the fact that another celebrity may be pregnant. This leads to not only the trivialization of affairs like rape, but the degradation of any form of privacy that a celebrity may have had before becoming famous.

The american people enjoy the flaws and misdeeds of them because it brings them down to their own level; it equalizes them and shows everyone that they're human. While I do think that this is fairly accurate, it obviously (as no mass blanket ever does) voice the opinions of the american people as a whole. Celebrities aren't any more likely than we are to get in a car crash, spill their coffee on themselves, or get arrested for wreckless driving than we are. People ppear good in public light by having a good reputation, through their words and their actions. But a person is good up to the point of where they aren't anymore, or at least, that's the way the public sees it. once a celebrity or rich do-gooder tarnishes their reputation, it takes quite a while to live it down.

The quote talks about how celebrities are more likely to be seen as a good or bad influence based on their actions. We see most of these celebrities daily lives, making them very careful about the decisions they make. I do agree with the quote because of how apparent it can be seen on the news every day. Our president, TV & Movie celebrities, and other famous people are shown on the news for a variety of reasons whether it be good or bad. We enjoy watching some of the people on the top of the world fall as they make mistakes or rise even more to their good deeds. Celebrities are much more likely to go through turmoil because of how easy it is for someone to spot their wrongdoings. It is much easier to point fingers to someone who is well known than it is to do it to someone who nobody knows. So many celebrities seem good to the public eye because it is almost their duty as someone with popularity to do so. When a celebrity is a part of a scandal, they are thrown into a pit because of the large crowd of people that once was on their side, now turned against them for the celebrities wrong actions.

Seeing celebrities make horrible life choices and them being horrible people makes the public feel more at ease with themselves. Yes, I agree with it, any time it is publicized that some celebrity has ultimately messed up it helps regular people feel better about themselves because at least their own faults aren't out there where everyone can see them. I don't think celebrities are more likely than other people to go through turmoil, its just that the money and the fame make it seem bigger than it may be for other people. Every time a celebrity messes up its essentially is immortalized through the Internet and there's no covering it up or taking it back because someone will always nitpick and find faults in someone who's life is so available to be seen.

The celebrities you see in magazines or on tv are idols to people, everyone sees celebrities as better than everyone else. This quote mentions how when these celebrities mess up it makes non famous people feel as equals to the famous ones. I agree Americans see these people as entertainment, you can't help but get fascinated with the Kardashians, but I don't think we see them as our equals when they get in trouble. Celebrities have a certain power over the public, not only do they have money and can do more things than we normally can, but they also are allowed to more places; that can cause trouble. I think celebrities do appear in more of bad situations and get in trouble more because it's broadcasted everywhere; you see someone's got a ticket and they're automatically judged. However if a friend got a ticket or even your parent, you'd just shake your head and forget about it.

It hints at the fact that publicity about flaws of those who are supposedly "better" than us satisfy our senses. I agree with this quote and its claims. Far too many people enjoy seeing other people fall, especially when they are at a higher status. Celebrities are much more likely to go through this because they are the center of attention for many people worldwide. They slip up one time, and suddenly they go from being on top of the world to being hated

Scandals, you see them happen so often so its like it happens and so what. No one really cares about it. We all go through something rough but it's not gonna taunt us forever. Even so, we enjoy to gossip about those who are more fortunate than us, its kind of a hypocritical way of thinking huh. I do agree, people are constantly bashing anyone with any type of fame, any time they mess up or have a flaw. Of course celebrities are more likely to go through turmoil than regular people, the fact that we ostracize them to the point of calling them celebrities gives point to that, their lives are constantly on tv and news tabloids. Celebrities get their money and fame, their lifestyle off of the public so having them on their good side is beneficial for them. However, not everyone is always so good, people have their bad sides, and with celebrities it blows up in their faces.
