Darrow, the main character, eventually joins the Red resistance and goes undercover as a Gold to try to make things more equal for the Reds and the other classes of society. But will they discover him??

Anyone who enjoys science fiction, adventure, or even stories about revolutions would like Red Rising. I highly recommend it!

By Abigail Walker
The Giver is the first of a series of four books. The community in the book entered into a state of "sameness" many years ago, which eliminated all agency, diversity, and uniqueness. One person in the community, The Receiver, holds all the memories from before sameness to guide the community. When Jonas, a young 12 year old boy, is chosen to be the new Receiver, he is trained and given memories. Will Jonas be able to handle the truth about the past and his community?

A reader who enjoys utopian and science fiction will enjoy this book because it is about a futuristic society that is 'perfect' and more advanced in almost every way, but without technology (because it was written in the 1930's).

recommended by - Yash Sharma
Pages: 240

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is a memoir written by Yale Professor Amy Chua, who describes the story of raising her two daughters strictly using universally influential Chinese parenting. Enter Louisa (nicknamed Lulu) and Sophia, who played violin and piano. Practicing incessantly and obtaining the role of concertmaster/Carnegie Hall respectively, a rebellious and questioning (according to Chua, ‘western’) side begins to emerge in both of them, asking the much debatable question - is Chinese parenting necessarily the best? By the end, you’ll definitely have the answer like I did, with moments that will make you laugh, think hard, and which you can eventually use to expand on a greater truth about human nature.

A reader who enjoys getting to learn about different experiences and critical thinking would definitely love this book because of the debatable, yet extremely interesting, story, and also because of some of the hidden symbolism that you may not notice with a first read. Overall, I think any reader would enjoy this, because of a real story - these kids aren’t superhumans from another planet. They’re just like you and me, something that I kept in mind every time I closed the book!

Hope you enjoy this read like I did!

The Paper Menagerie - by Ken Liu

recommended by - Yash Sharma

Pages: 450

The Paper Menagerie is a collection of short stories written by Ken Liu; these stories are in no particular order, and may seem like radically different science and historical fiction tales at first, but have connecting morals and symbolism (if you hunt for hidden puzzle pieces in the book, it can provide for an excellent re-read). There are several stories to choose from - The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species takes you on a fictional joyride through parts of the Universe, excitingly examining how many species ‘make books’ and pass information on to further generations. Things take a darker, more shocking turn in The Literomancer, where a Chinese-American girl with parochial views meets a man near a Taiwanese camp in the 1960, not knowing his Communist background. An Advanced Reader's Picture Book of Comparative Cognition, no matter how strange it seems, is a father's way of teaching his son about love - all, of course, while the Earth is dying (Liu had to, right?). So, what exactly are the “morals and symbolism” behind this? That’s for you to find out.

A reader who enjoys plunging into short science-fiction, historical-fiction, and mythical stories would love this book because of how easily you are sucked into an extremely detailed spiel, and also because of the several aliens, solar sails, samurai, black holes and moving origami (in short - really cool beans)! If you’re a scavenger of hidden details, philosophies, and symbolism - you’re in luck, because as mentioned, there’s a lot of that in store as well.

Enjoy reading these!

recommended by - Yash Sharma

Pages: 152

Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse, is a read about a young man and his spiritual journey, and how the people he met and the places he went to affected his heresies and behavior in so many ways. The novel takes place during the time of Gotama Buddha and his enlightenment; the plot revolving around that event. Enter Siddhartha - a boy who is thought of very highly by family, friends, and community alike, but is very cynical and curious about his surroundings and the meaning of life. His desires to become a Samana, or a wandering ascetic, worry his parents due to the amounts of patience and sacrifice required, but ultimately, Siddhartha’s quest for peace pushes him and his friend Govinda into following the Samana ways. They end up leaving home, but separate when Govinda discovers the Buddha and his practices; none end up becoming Samanas. Siddhartha follows his own path and meets new people - a merchant, a woman, a ferryman, even Govinda shows up - and his thoughts and change of perspective on love, foolishness, suicide, and religion provide for an incredible read. I won’t talk about the rest of the book, as Siddhartha's final decision - a culmination of his many thoughts - truly is amazing.

A reader who enjoys simple yet eye-opening books, historical fiction, or just a short, two-sitting read would like this book because of an interesting story (with interesting characters too) that is short and smart, that also teaches a lesson at the end - the whole story is about finding true peace in life, amidst mixed opinions about meditation, religion, and the modern concept of ‘the good life’ which many have come to terms with.

The story is set on our dying Earth in the year 2044, where 18-year-old Wade Watts spends almost all of his time in the OASIS, a virtual reality headset, that allows him to live in a universe full of planets based off of video games, music, and television of the 80s. One day, when the creator of the headset dies, he leaves his extravagant wealth - and control of his company - in one 'Easter Egg' hidden inside OASIS. Several 'gunters' (truncated 'egg hunters') begin deeply analyzing clues and hints given by the creator, for over five years. And when Wade, known as Parzival in-game, finally deciphers the first clue, the race begins; this lands Wade with other intelligent players, and also a lucrative, super evil company hellbent on obtaining that fortune. What happens next? Perfect Pac-Man scores, Stargates, DJ wizards with zero-grav dancefloors, antimatter bombs, and even Mechagodzilla. You heard that last one right.

A reader who enjoys science-fiction, adventure and pop-culture will love this book because of the diverse, rich, and ultimately relatable references that each page of the book is full of. Regardless of your age or knowledge on the topics and several cool games, music, and shows, there will be something to explore, learn and laugh at for everybody. It also teaches valuable lessons about friendship, love, and how to beat a game of Joust more easily.

I hid a reference in this post, actually. Can you find it?

Recommended by Charlotte Walker
This book is for anyone who loves to read the old classics, and loves a touch of romance.

Jane Eyre was not always the luckiest child. Her parents dies when she was a babe. She was taken in by her uncle, but the rest of his family despised the child. She was a very plain child, without much to look at. When her uncle died, she was left in the care of her aunt, who only took her in because of a promise to Jane’s uncle. Jane had always been treated very poorly. She was lucky enough to be able to attend a boarding school for orphans at the age of 10. Her life there was not the most pleasant. When she was 18, Jane left the school to teach at the home of a rich bachelor, Mr. Rochester. She was to teach a little French girl that he had taken in as his ward. But Jane had come upon a problem, she had fallen in love with Mr. Rochester, who was 20 years her senior. But Mr. Rochester was hiding something. Something that could ruin chances of their love.

recommended by Charlotte Walker
This book is for those who like adventure, and who love a good fight. These creatures are Scottish, so it gives the reader a fun time of reading in that accent.

In a world of only animals, a raving beast named Gulo the Savage, has come from across the Great Northern Sea from the land of snow and ice. A stone of power, has been stolen from him, and it is the only thing standing in his way from becoming the ruler of the cold lands. Rakkety Tam, was a soldier for a pompous fat squirrel who calls himself king. After an incident in which many a squirrel were killed, Tam was sent in exchange for his freedom, to hunt down the beast who had done it. Gulo traces the Walking Stone back to an abbey called Redwall. Tam must band together with hares and squirrel alike, to defend Redwall, and the creature whom Gulo calls the Walking Stone. Along the way, Tam meets a young squirrel, from the Abbey, whom he falls in love with. He must defend Redwall, and defeat the terror who had wrecked the livers of the peaceful animal folk.
