Time spent with mothers is believed to be important for the well-being of their children. According to American culture, a tremendous amount of time and energy should be given to children. The "Mommy Wars" makes mothers who work feel guilty about the time they spend away from their children. Mothers who work find it difficult to meet the expectations of intense hands-on mothering. It is believed that the amount of time mothers spend with their children is irreplaceable. To live up to these expectations is exhausting and daunting. According to Hays (1996), "intensive mothering" serves the purpose of " men, whites, the upper classes, capitalist owners and state leaders."
