For our design, we chose to focus on creating a brand new classroom environment that incorporates the welcoming and home-centered aspects that nature facilitates rather than the often cold and uncomfortable feeling students are overwhelmed with upon entering the classroom. To do so, we included wood focused furniture that resembled the patterns of true trees students see everyday, asymmetrical vine and flower covered walls that not only created a classroom of comfort but opened the door for students minds to wander and explore within the classroom. In addition, we incorporated grand windows all along the classroom that allowed for the natural light to flood in and provide true warmth and light versus the traditional overhead lighting of most classrooms, as well as hidden electrical lighting to improve the functionality of the classroom without taking away from the natural essence the classroom intends to capture. Knowing of Frank Lloyds interest in Japanese architecture we included Japanese style lighting to expand the diversity the classroom produces. Lastly, knowing of Frank Lloyds expansive and non-traditional thinking when designing, we included booth-like seating that encourages student engagement with one another as well as comfort instead of the traditional symmetrical seating seen in classrooms of today that.

For our design we incorporated a lot of natural elements including wood furniture and walls, tree shaped book shelves, many windows, and a garden center in the middle. The classroom is very open and shows form after function because the room is just a rectangle. We took inspiration from Wright’s furniture by using similar chair designs. We also incorporated a fireplace, which was very common in Wright’s architecture.

Sally & Lily’s cafeteria redesign

We decided to redesign the cafeteria. We incorporated nature in the variety spaces for plants, and took away the wall between the cafeteria and the atrium to let natural light in again. This embodies Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideals of incorporating nature in architecture.

We chose to design a classroom in the math wing because it is very outdated with very few windows. We added lots of windows, which Wright would value to bring natural light. We added one long table for the students, as he would value unity and working together with higher chairs to keep people’s attention engaged. We added plants because it brings in a nature aspect that would make sense in a room, and we put the teacher desk by the window so they can look out at nature while working. We added a geometric light in the middle as he used a lot of geometric shapes and lines.

In the current fine arts wing, Frank Lloyd Wright would criticize the lack of natural light, dull colors and boring feel. He would want to see more “compression and release”, as the current design only has compression, no release. In our 2 new redesigns, we offer much more open space, natural light, and natural elements. We tried to make our spaces very geometric, while using natural materials to ground the space and make it feel natural and comfortable. We also made sure to follow the function of the building first, providing plenty of space for each of the different fine arts disciplines, as well as spacious hallways fit to holding lots of students. In the new auditorium, we also created different entrances and exits to accommodate large amounts of people as well as keeping acoustics in mind for our design. We believe Frank Lloyd Wright would far prefer our new designs over the current state of the building.

Uhhhh so this is honestly just a house… but it’s very Victorian and definitely something F.LW. would enjoy. I incorporated lots of large windows including an extravagant stained glass window in the middle (yes that’s what that is) which has some flower designs in it (I included the angels trumpet flower). There are two balconies, for some nature incorporation, and a wrap-around porch. The two front windows are stained glass with flower designs.

I’m already pretty satisfied with the existing library design, but one of the ways I decided to incorporate Frank Lloyd Wright was by creating many windows, including a glass ceiling to emulate the feeling of openness and being one with nature. I’d imagine the ceiling would be double-paned to help with temperature, and to follow the function of a library needing quiet. There’s a piece of nature on every table, in this case, a potted rose, and there would be a tree in the center of the room, to integrate the room with the world outside, following Wright’s style of organic architecture. The bookshelves and low ceilings were designed to emphasize the horizontal lines of the room, with how the bookshelves protrude in a way similar to cantilever roofs. Finally, the chairs are long to force you to focus on what you are reading, in an example of form following function, and there is also a small light on each table to advance the reading experience if needed.

We redesigned the fine art wing. We added built ins to the classrooms for extra storage and a large backstage. We also added skylights to bring natural light into the classroom and foster creativity. In the practice rooms we added sound proofing to create quiet and in the dance room we added better floors to dance on.

Pool redesign

If Frank Lloyd Wright were to redesign the BHS pool, he would value connecting the architecture with nature. He would include large floor to ceiling windows to add natural light to the space. Not only this, but he would value adding small touches of nature to the bottom of the pool (mosaic tile that consist of warm colors), and stained glass half-windows that represent the look of water in natural places like the beach or lake.

for my redesign I chose the lower atrium. It already has a lot of elements FLW would enjoy, like the open floor plan, natural lighting, and lots of glass. I decided to add red stained glass at the second tier of windows because stained glass is prominent feature in his work. I chose red because it is a school color and bring the room together nicely. The red glare from the windows will bring a unique and warm vibe to the room. I also decided to place a large tree in the middle because FLW often added natural elements to his designs. On the ground, I drew spiral tile that lead up to the tree because spirals are a pattern FLW often incorporated in his architecture.

I included nature by adding a bit of a waterfall by the front of the pool, a stony looking edge, and green lane lines. I incorporated its function by making sure to add the bars coming out of the waterfall, so swimmers can still easily push off the wall. The stone is also smoother in texture to ensure safety for the swimmers. Water tends to make you feel calmer, so the sound of the waterfall will add to that feeling.

Today we will be redesigning the courtyard by the English wing, we wanted to redesign it because it felt too walled up. We added bushes around all the walls with vines hanging down from the walls to create a lush feeling without seeing any walls, creating a persona that allows the person to feel like they are in a jungle. We added compression and release into the design by adding an arch to the wall. When the person walks from inside of the school to the court yard they are greeted by a seemingly endless forest. We added a path to give the person a place to walk through the garden area to promote peacefulness.

For my design, I did the cafeteria. I included, a waterfall, birds outside and lily pad (also used to hold up the structure for his beliefs on form and function)as Frank Lloyd loves nature. In addition to that, the back wall was mostly windows, to add to the nature touch. Lastly I did a mostly open floor plan, as Frank Lloyd used it a lot.

The glass roof allows for natural lighting, but the vines from the tree allow for it to not be too bright. To keep with FLW’s natural theme, it also has moss beds. They are in a row for community. It also has a therapy bunny and a pond for nice sounds to help calm people before they nap. More mushroom chairs for extra seating.

In our design we incorporated Frank Lloyd Wrights open floor plan. We did this by making a communal bathroom. On top of this we included Wrights ideology of organic architecture by including a waterfall/koi pond to wash your hands. Then we kept a tree as a support post to hold up the school. This will make the viewers reconnect with nature while taking a trip to the bathroom.

For our design, we chose to redesign the school library, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. We started with an open floor plan, with the bookshelves by the walls. In the middle area, we have comfortable seating with tables for people to discuss books and ideas. In the center we have horizontal rows of plants to add greenery and emphasize the horizontal.

Frank Lloyd enjoys open spaces with the use of natural local materials. Because of this I added tiles which are made of clay, I also used a continuous warm colored scheme that was earth toned. To keep it private the windows are only present above a certain point, for extra privacy frank Lloyd would definitely add stained glass to add more earth inspired stuff. Frank also experiments on his shapes like octagons and just creating a unique experience. There is also a grand amount of sky light on the ceiling to get that sense of the outside while being inside.

We chose to redesign the auditorium in the school. We chose a room with very horizontal furniture additions to incorporate Wright’s emphasis on horizontal. We also added many plants in the room to display Wright’s love and connection to nature. For the chairs, we also chose to use ones with a high back, as seen in some of his previous designs to show that you should be focusing on one thing at a time, and not be distracted by other things.

The section I chose to redesign is the lunch room/lower atrium. I believe that Frank Lloyd Wright would change this space by including more windows going all the way around the lunch room, allowing for more natural light and connection to nature. That is also the reason why I added the big tree in the middle of the atrium. In Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water project, he built/designed the house on top of/around the waterfall, so I decided to incorporate a waterfall inside the atrium. The lunchroom/atrium before this was very compact and there were only windows in the atrium with little to no connection to nature, which FLW would criticize. Also to incorporate his prairie style features, I redesigned the area to have more natural, earthy-tone colors -- as well as, including horizontal lines in the windows and ceilings. In Frank Lloyd Wright's studio, his furniture and lighting in the dining room was very cozy, so I decided to add his infamous high-backed chairs for the intimacy FLW encouraged in a dining space. Lastly, I decided to add some Japanese style paintings in the lunch room because of FLW's love for Japanese style art and architecture.
