I learnt that there are three methods approaches namely qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research. Qualitative research focuses on narrative data whilst quantitative research is concerned with numerical data and mixed research is a combination of the two. The research methods used in qualitative research are phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory and case study whilst quantitative research are experimental research, quasi-experimental research and non- experimental research. Research designs are classified in two categories namely exploratory and conclusive. In order to conduct a research or problem, decision must be made as whether you use the entire population, sample. According to Zikmund et al. (2009) define sampling as “a procedure that uses a small number of units of a given population as a basis for drawing conclusions about the whole population” (p. 409). A sample is used because it is faster, within budget and requires less human resources. There are also two types of sampling designs; probability and non-probability. Types of Probability sampling are simple random, systematic, stratified and cluster sampling. Types of Non probability sampling are convenience, judgement, quota ans snowball sampling. There are seven sampling processes namely define target population, select sampling frame, determine use of probability or non probability, plan procedure for selecting sampling units, determine sample size, select actual sapling units and conduct fieldwork.
