This medication is a weak opioid used to treat mild to moderate pain, even though it is a weak opioid, it is still an opioid, and has a possibility of some dependency issues so you should only take this medication if you are in pain and have been unable to relieve the pain by alternative methods, like a heating pad/ ice pack or things of that nature. Some side effects you may experience while taking this medication could be sedation, dizziness, or urinary retention (trouble using the bathroom, or not using it as frequently as usual), if you experience any of these side effects and they are bothersome for you and you are still experiencing pain, please hold your next dose and call the Dr. Office. Some rare but adverse effects to watch for would be respiratory depression, meaning you are taking less than 12 complete breaths (in and out= 1 breath) per minute, or seizures. If this occurs you should go directly to the emergency room for further evaluation. You should not operate any heavy machinery or drive a vehicle while taking tramadol until you know how this medication effects you. I would also encourage you to drink plenty of fluids and increase your fiber intake while taking this medication due to a possibility of constipation.  This medication interacts with with some antidepressants, so if you are currently taking an SSRI you should let myself or the Doctor know before taking it. I would then ask the patient if they understood what I have explained  and ask if they had any questions. I would provide written material if needed.
