Millions of animals in the U.S. alone are put to death inhumanely because of drunk or careless humans. Pet breeders abandon or kill pets because they are not cute and will not be sold. People abandon animals in pounds or just in the streets because they take up too much time and are an inconvenience. Also, many people buy pets from shops or breeders when they can save a life by adopting from a shelter. People think that if they abandon animals, it is the local shelter's responsibility. They may be right, but the shelter can't operate on its own. It needs people to think when they adopt an animal, and to make sure that they will keep the animal and not just give it up.

His neighbor was threatening to chop off the head of the dog he was caring for. As soon as Miguel found out, he ran over to try to knock sense into him. The police were called and Miguel, his brother, and the neighbor, were all brought to the hospital. They all had several cuts and injuries. Sadly, Miguels cuts were too big that he died later the following morning. Only 30% of dogs and 5% of cats get returned to their owners after being dropped of at a local shelter. Another way to help is to become a foster parent. It allows dogs to stay in a temporary home while also finding new permanent homes. Finally, the most important way to reduce animal abandonment is to be a caring guardian to your pet. If everyone took responsibility of their pets, there would be no abandoned animals in the first place.
