I think jigsaw activities help students feel comfortable. They start out in a group where they all have the same topic/problem to become experts, then they go back to a new group to share their information.

I'd like to try a technology based one so I'd love to know of any in particular y'all have used and like.

As far as supports - depending on the level of EL (or any learner for that matter), I might have the EL tell the answer to a table mate who will then call it out in a class discussion. I have done exit tickets where I can then have written answers to discuss with the class.

Students can get really stressed out when you randomly call on them using a Random Name Generator but the trust comes with how you react to their response. If they struggle, give them time, don't let others hurry up and answer just because they know it, help guide their response with a sentence stem. Sometimes they need to think about it and circle back to them. Often when a student is called on, they quit listening. With this app, you can have every student chosen once before repeating names or their name can go back in the pile to be repeated at random.

I hope to create personal connections with all students. It doesn't always work but a one on one, "hello," or a fist bump, and "how are you?" seems to go a long way in creating ease of communication between a student and teacher.

I like randomizing with index cards- but I have found it more useful to use "rotating" because the learners in my classroom were always in groups (so having the learners number off from 1-4 was helpful and guaranteed that each student would be asked a question and they had the safety net of their peers in their groups.

The comfort level of the student drives the way we participate in class. There are always frames on the wall to assist students with forming responses, both oral and written. Sometimes it is random and sometimes it only appears random. We also pick numbers and roll dice. One of their favorites is "phone a friend" - they can participate, but if they get stuck, they have support. Group answers also work. The key is knowing the students and creating an environment they are comfortable in and willing to take risks. Answering in front of peers is a HUGE risk for a non-native speaker (some native speakers as well)

I like to chose a different student from table groups and go around the room to ensure all students are being called on and have an opportunity to share. In my classroom, I am all about respect and I model this and share this expectation on Day 1. I believe this allows all students to feel comfortable to share and take risks in their learning.

One method that works well is choosing a trustworthy student to be the one to call on people. Pick the right person and everyone thinks it is fair.

In Spanish class, we often are practicing aloud with conversational-type use of new vocabulary and concepts. Sometimes we randomly pick a partner, or perhaps I start the "thread" by speaking to one student and they respond to me. Then that student addresses another student and they respond to them and so on. That gives us an opportunity to work together as a class while still allowing me to hear each individual person speak in the target language.

I had sentence frames on key rings for each table group, so if learners needed even more help with framing their sentences based on thinking process/verb, they had that available to them. There were many think, pair, share opportunities to allow all learners to discuss and formulate their opinion/thoughts before sharing out to the whole class.

I like to use group discussion before I go to individual discussions. This allows the students to become more comfortable speaking in a small setting before speaking in front of the whole class. It also allows those students who maybe are struggling with the concept to hear from others to help them understand the topic. Trust and creating a safe environment for all students is critical for student buy in. If they do not feel that it is a safe area and it is ok if they are wrong then they will not participate.

Other effective engaging techniques I use is I will require an unexpected choral response during instruction. For example, "If 15 + 6=21, everybody say, Uh huh". This can keep all learners on their toes!
I incorporate a lot of opportunities to Think-Pair-Share, which is helpful for ELs and all learners. Many online randomizers are also fun and engaging. ELs , as well as all learners, are always free to ask a friend if stumped. I find it is helpful for the learner who asked the friend, to orally repeat the given answer for their own affirmation.

I love allowing learners time to share with a partner before I call on them. It gives them time to think, share, and possibly gain some confidence before sharing in front of the class. I have used popsicle sticks, and the class dojo randomizer. At the start of the year, I work with my kids on what to say instead of "I don't know." I think that helps them all feel safe to respond, but still allows them to communicate in a complete sentence.

I forget to give adequate wait/thinking time before calling on someone though, and need to be better about remembering to do that! I also love the idea of a think-pair-share before-hand to give reluctant sharers a chance to vet their ideas with a classmate before sharing with the whole class.

I like to allow my learners to discuss in their table groups, so I can walk around and get a better idea of where each learner's ideas/thoughts are at. After reading Ch. 6 it seems that this approach is more appropriate.
To help ELs feel more comfortable answering questions, I believe that partner/table group talk is a great strategy to help them feel more confident. When I have table groups share out, I like to choose a different learner each time to share, so the same learner is not dominating the conversation while also giving ELs a chance to share.

I had a requirement that everyone had to participate at least three times, but that participation could be at the comfort level of each learner. I also encouraged all learners in the circles to encourage their peers to be part of the conversations. What I found was that when EL's were comfortable they participated and when we were able to make connections in the discussion back to personal examples my EL learners really participated. I am a big fan of this type of class discussion and feel that it allows for all to be involved.

EL learners do need longer to process, so it is good to start the year helping these students feel comfortable and confident talking in from of the class. After giving them some questions that you feel confident are ones they can contribute on, you can start challenging them more. Using a random name generator is another way to help ensure that you are calling on all students as the year progresses. I agree that 'think-pair-share' or other small group experiences are a great way for EL students to use their voice and practice.

I plan on using the same method this school year. When answering questions to a warm-up, class discussion, and or even group work. Students were given opportunity to discuss with other students at their table with sentence stems or conversations starters. This allowed not only ELLs to to hear multiple point of views but be given time to process what they would like to say if they are called upon. I have tried the index card method before but I felt it didn't allow students to be held accountable of what they learned. With cold-calling, any student in the classroom is expected to be called on. I would as the educator would become the facilitator and would redirect the conversation if need be.

Because of the nature of my classroom (non-verbal) when we are in a small group I randomly change the order in which learners perform a task. They are each given an object so we can see if they anticipate when their turn may be coming or when we are on their object. Within the group we use varied materials with a basic repetitive format. We have had great success with the "Little Old Lady Who Swallowed ___ " series paired with corresponding objects. We work on the story weekly and change books each month. We make sure that a different learner starts each time and that they always get a different object with a different task. We have back up tasks ready in the event we lose the attention of a learner. (Ex: We show them the actual book to bring them back to the story, help them touch the picture we are talking about, or present the object to them to feel and encourage them to watch their friend. There is no embarrassment during this time because we are all learning together, working on different skills, and the lessons are highly varied for each specific learner. We do use assistive technology for learners to be able to provide voice output at times to answer questions, finish phrases, etc. and music as the learners are all highly motivated by music.

They even get to draw the sticks for me sometimes which totally increases engagement and more willingness to participate. I have index cards as well. I use different ones in table groups. Example highest odd number at table, someone wearing a jacket etc. I liked that the examples in the book were ones I frequently use. I try hard to use a variety with the learners. If I have an EL called on and they struggle they can have a partner help them with their response. Or they can repeat someone’s with help. They can speak in their native language and a partner can translate and help. Definitely utilize extra wait time or “I will come back to you.”

Ch 6 Due to the nature of my classroom (lab environment), there is not a need for calling on leaners for answers. If I did need to, I like the randomized option to prevent you from calling on the same learners repeatedly. The popsicle stick method is uncomplicated and fair. Lanschool also has a randomizer option I believe. Giving learners that "Pause and/or share time" to process and form their thoughts into words is beneficial and takes some of the stress off of answering out loud.

I've used randomization frequently over my career, starting with the classic popsicle stick in a can and moving on to Stick Pick (digital version). I really like using a digital app because you can add information such as EL language level to remind you as the "stick" comes up (in those early days of school) what level of support you might need to give the learner. Since I'm planning on experimenting with a grouping system this year, I also like and plan to use the idea mentioned on pg 60 of colored stickers to promote discussion within the group followed by one person sharing the group's thoughts. This gives them more opportunity to practice responding and takes some pressure off the individual.

I always use groups/teams (of 4 or more) when delivering and reflecting on new material. During discussions, there are at least four talk-backs points and each person must respond to one of these reflection pauses. Students are encouraged to speak for their team (after a few moments to discuss with group). Also, each student can “choose” which discussion point they wish to respond to. I feel this helps them have confidence because they can respond to what they feel most comfortable with.
The resources they have would be vocab I write on the board (or slides). ELLs also have the native English speakers in their group as well as another friend I might have paired them up with (best case scenario is to put someone who speaks their language in their group as well).

I have used online randomizing apps whose roster order are sometimes known only by me, and sometimes are posted in advance (especially if questions are complex and correlate to others around it: they are encouraged to pay attention to others' answers). For ELL support, I can purposefully ask questions to expand on or go a different direction than a previous answer to lessen having to mentally scramble to gather content as well as fluency. Once I know their level of comfort, it is also easy to strategically insert questions to have the class discuss in pairs or tables and then monitor small discussions. This has helped to lower anxiety of articulating to the whole group while ensuring they are given equal opportunity and voice.

Matt Bowden My literature class is sort of founded on our class discussions, but I rarely call on students randomly. I usually select a student moderator and share the discussion questions a few days ahead of the actual discussion. This gives students, including ELs, to think and reflect on the questions and their responses ahead of time. Inevitably, the discussion takes on a more organic feel and goes down various unexpected rabbit holes, but the questions are our grounding point.

By assigning roles that rotate as class discussion progresses, it gives every learner a chance to share their voice. The first answer is structured through collaboration within the group, but the response to guided questions rests solely on the speaker for that round. Sentence stems provide a great way to help direct EL learners toward an appropriate response.
