In economics, a depression is a sustained, long-term downturn in economic activity in one or more economies. It is a more severe downturn than an economic recession, which is a slowdown in economic activity over the course of a normal business cycle.

Causes of the Great Depression

The main cause of the Great Depression was that company's businesses were booming during WW1 and there was a high supply because there was a high demand and after the war ended the demand went way down and companies didn't slow production so they went out of business from losing too much money and bad management for the companies. Another main cause was the stocks were booming during the war and people kept buying and stocks were going down in September 1929 and people didn't sell at the high they just kept buying and on October 29th, 1929 the stock market completely crashed and people's big name stocks were worth pennies and in some cases absolutely nothing at all. The stock market was a US thing because back then they didn't have the internet so people couldn't buy US stocks unless they lived in the US or if they went to the US to buy them which wouldn't be worth the trip because it would cost so much. And then people went to banks to get all of their money out in the big panic and then the banks couldn't give people their money because they did not have and then many banks went out of business. This is the reason that bank accounts are FDIC insured up to $250,000 now.
Since people had no money during this time businesses like restaurants and stores just went out of business cause they had no customers. And the people with jobs would get their paychecks as soon as they got paid and they would spend it as soon as possible because if they didn't their money would lose a ton of value. This was more of a Germany effect but it happened less severely in the USA.

This Great Depression led to Hitler being the Germany leader because people were in desperate lead for a leader and the country was in a vulnerable time and people wanted change because what they were already doing was not working. And Hitler got voted in by the people and there wasn't any obvious warnings that people could detect then that he was gonna end up the biggest terrorist in history

Art during this time period turned into propaganda. And countries used art to help with their propaganda. Dada- was an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war. The art, poetry and performance produced by Dada artists is often satirical and nonsensical in nature. Introduction to Dada. Dada was a very depressing art and was dark and was flashback art of WW1. (Dada) Surrealism was very disturbing art that was very hard to figure out the meaning of the artwork. But it did thrive during this time period. (Surrealism) Walt Disney emerged into the entertainment business during the Great Depression and he made a lot of comedies during this time period to get people's minds off the horrible time in history. Also radio was a big thing because it was free besides the cost of the radio and so basically it was free entertainment. They used propaganda on the radio and in movies by saying stuff like "times like this it's not what can your country do for you, but what you can do for your country". Another related one would be like "if you have time to listen to the radio or go to the movies then you have time to help your country. (Entertainment)

Books during this time were rejected by most people because they wanted to watch movies or listen to the radio. Mainly the books were only read by politicians or people that were interested in politics. Although people didn't like reading books, magazines really came to life during this time period and life magazine was formed and this was the time of the magazines.
