5. Gaming/hospitality is one of the major industries on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Right now, these businesses which primarily employ low/minimum wage workers, are all closed due to social distancing requirements. Consequently, their employees who were already struggling due to low wages find themselves without a way to keep up with expenses for food, rent, utilities, medical/dental, etc. The same is true for many small business owners and gig/contract workers. Likewise, because schools are closed, those who have not lost their jobs may have to stay home to take care of their school-aged children. Many of our local affiliate NGO's are doing a great job of providing families with meals and funding to cover basic living expenses. However, given the current projections for the duration of local stay-at-home orders, we are concerned that support resources will be exhausted before the COVID-19 curve flattens. Consequently, additional funding for crisis support services will be essential for sustaining the community until the crisis passes.

4. My community members have access to PPE -- many have sewn their own masks and have stockpiled items before many others did. What I have seen are victims of domestic violence delaying their plans to leave abusive partners because of COVID-19. I have also witnessed many issues around custody and visitation linked to COVID-19, where abusive spouses have either tried to revoke visits or victims/survivors struggled to assert themselves and keep children safe by attempting to withhold visits. Custody matters are complicated so narratives about domestic violence often don't incorporate these stories. However, victims are often linked to their abusers through the children, and sadly abusive tactics are extended this way.

11. a 96 year old client lives by herself and left isolated by family to keep her safe from contracting the virus. She only sees her son from the window when they drop of food for her. Her other daughter tested positive with the virus. She's alone most of the time. We made phone calls to more than 600 elders and when we called her and asked how she was doing, she started crying and said that she is happy that someone is calling her. She felt more secure knowing someone is thinking of her well being. We now call her every other day to check in. Last easter, we sent bouquets to 10 seniors so we can help Hmong and Lao flower farmers. All of them called in crying and thanking us. Small gestures like these helps those in isolation feel less lonely. The invisible seniors in our community are affected more compared to us. Let's not forget them.

Unfortunately, the state needs pressure on its leaders to plan for an economic model that doesn't rely on NHPI (including Filipino) and Asian immigrants to provide the lions share of work in this industry for Hawaii. Medicaid applications are up 79% in the past 2 weeks. The economic recovery models must have a future that is positive for people of color, especially AANHPI who are losing their jobs, benefits, and positive outlook.

21. A pregnant client, East Asian-language only speaking. She is new to the country and does not speak English. She uses FQHC for her health care needs. She needed to see a doctor but the clinic wanted her to do a Tele-medical appointment. She has been leaving them messages in Vietnamese and they in English. There have been three rounds of back and forth but she has not met a doctor yet. An example of lack of language access during the COVID crisis -- as her pregnancy progresses without prenatal care.	2. A client from South Asia who has been through the most severe form of physical abuse that our agency has r seen, actually got the Virus. She has two small children 9 months and 4 years. She has a PO and is taking care of the children alone. She has no health insurance. Her FQHC card is in the process of being approved. Her kids go to daycare for ‘free’ normally, but now they are at home as she does not have transportation money to drop them. She works for Home depot but Home-depot is not approving her paid sick leave. Her abuser wants to help her but she does not want to lose the PO restrictions. Since the last 2 days her 4-year-old is running 103 temperature.

20. My mom started suffering from vertigo attacks 3 weeks ago. She ended up in the ER and they did a CT scan and sent her home. She didnt’ improve and was able to ask a family member to take her to a doctor, who did blood work and an X-ray and told her he couldn’t do anything for her even though her Vitamin B and Potassium were low and she was severely dehydrated. A few days later she passed out at home and was take to ER via ambulance. She was kept in the COVID floor OVERNIGHT until her test results came back (they were negative) by she was severely dehydrated and needed Potassium. She has blood pressure issues and is the main caregiver for my dad who is blind and also has multiple health issues like kidney failure.

Mom fell once though. A lot of seniors are vulnerable in similar ways and not all are so lucky to have live-in temporary help. I thought I was going to lose my mom because it took 3 weeks for her vertigo to subside and in the meantime, she became frail and dehydrated.

26. Our community members are experiencing loss of jobs and income as many are working in small/family-owned businesses. There's huge need in unemployment benefits. There's also a lack of in-language information as the systems are very slow in making changes and provide language access. We are working with NM Dept of Workforce Solution and they identify Vietnamese as the 2nd language need based on the unemployment application and inquiries. However, they keep using "lack of funding" as an excuse for not translating the application or updates/announcements. During this time, our community members fall victimized by scam/fraud. Some Vietnamese community members were targeted for stimulus check scams/fraud and got their information stolen. We definitely feel an increasing hate crimes/incidents. In Albuquerque, a few weeks ago an international student at UNM got racist prank at the door of his dorm; the Asian noodle Bar restaurant on downtown Central got racist graffiti on their back door. In other parts of NM we have also seen an official at Luna county in video blaming "Asians" for the virus; and a restaurant in Kirtland with the sign that say "CLOSED you can thank China".

They’ve been around for 20 plus years and is a chinese immigrant ran business. I was able to speak to them in my Toisan language and they said they’re barely surviving. They laid off staff, business is down significantly, and landlord won’t work with them on rent assistance. I know a lot of aapi business owners getting hit really hard. People are also afraid to frequent aapi establishments due to COVID-19 originating in China. It may be difficult for LEP business owners to navigate grant and loans opportunities.

35. It is difficult to confine PI's to one home. It is their nature to be part of family members homes. Like a sibling's home, uncle or aunt's house. Due to downturn of the economy, we have two, three or more families in one home. Elderlly folks are locked down. Taulama for Tongans prepared PI food care packages and distributed to 45 Tongan Senior and 2 Fijian seniors. This was a "Touch of the Islands" to help them during this time. Our team was greeted with smiles, tears, and gratitude - they were no longer the "forget population"; but an honored part of the community. There were broad smiles, tears of joy and gratitude that they were still remembered. It cost us approx. $5,000 to purchase these goods and everyone felt good to connect to these seniors during these most difficult time. The children are another situation, they need some kind of internet education where they can zoom in and join the other kids. Maybe this is an opportunity to do cultural story telling and teach them a few Tongan words or sentences, maybe songs. I believe there will be lots of people from the community who are not working and can do this. Just an idea. Zoom is such a wonderful way to connect. Taulama has a weekly radio program and we have been focusing on COVID-19 and the Census. Thank you for wanting to hear about us, so much appreciated.
