Elementary - not always made a priority and more of an after-thought add on.

When I think of Climate Change Science Education I think about the scientific evidence, causes, and impacts of human-induced climate change. These are not topics in my district's science curriculum.

When I think of Climate Justice Science Education I think of the links of climate science directly to social, racial, economic, and intergenerational justice. It focuses on the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized communities.

How it often is: rote, dogmatic, disconnected.

Formal Science. logic, mathematics, computer science, theory

Nature made

Deeper knowledge for the curious and those willing to dig deep.

Attempts to meet at some middle ground but usually lacking for both struggling and gifted learners.

How to form groups and strong opinions

In middle school - college though, I would say that it was a great opportunity to get more hands on, interactive experiences with science which is where I learned most if not all of my science knowledge since it wasn't a focus in elementary school.

If I had to make an educated guess as to what this is, I would say that it is taking what is learned in the classroom about climate change and applying it to real world situations.

Who climate change will affect and how.

-Following a curriculum

-Not always consistently taught

-Companies finding topics that may be most engaging for students

• Focus on facts, vocabulary, and scientific processes

• Heavy emphasis on memorization and correct answers

• Teacher as the “expert” delivering information

• Scientific method as the central framework

• Focus on causes and effects of climate change

• Use of graphs, data trends, and scientific models

• Discussion of weather vs. climate

• Learning rooted in current events and real-world evidence

• Focus on who is most impacted by climate change and why

• Connects science with social justice and human rights

• Explores how race, poverty, geography, and policy affect environmental harm

• Centers marginalized and frontline communities

Teachers must encourage students to allow for new information that may add to or refute a previous understanding. A starting point would be a KWOL wall chart or smaller one in notebooks. Include opportunities for parents to contribute their thoughts; maybe a section in a student notebook where household members share what they know about climate change.
