Sexism is discrimination and often stereotyping based on gender. Sexism is often against women. Sexism in football is a massive issue and has been over the whole history of the sport. In 1921, when women football was very popular due to men being away fighting the wars, the FA, banned women from playing matches on their stadiums. This almost stopped the development of women football around the whole country. This is a prime and perfect example of sexism. In addition to this, sexism is still current to this day, in 2011, Sky Sports, one of the biggest live sports broadcasting networks fired one of their most popular presenters as he had made sexist jokes towards women and them referring football games.

In modern sport gender issues are still huge and hinder the development of ability levels in women football. The 1921 ban lasted until 1971, this is a huge time period that the development of women football was almost completely stopped due to the FA thinking football wasn't suitable for women. During this time, mens football was continuously growing and developing with increasing popularity and ability levels. Due to the increasing popularity in mens football the sport was also becoming more popular across the world, this however, was not the case women football as it was receiving much lower attendance and getting much less viewership than mens football. This impact on women football was massive, as mens football continued to grow it overshadowed women football, competitions such as the Europa and Champions League was being introduced for men and women struggled to form a top flight league for top women teams to compete against each other, this league formed in 1992 in England. However, in Wales, women football teams did not have a top flight league to compete in until 2009 when the Welsh premier league was formed. In conclusion to this, the large amount of sexism and discrimination as well as stereotyping in women football has massively affect the progression of women football as it is hugely unpopular compared to mens football. This can simply be explained by the large amounts of sexism that has stopped women from competing in matches for a period of almost 50 years, this 50 years can be blamed on the FA (Football Association) as they enforced this ban. It is also evident that sexism still exists in football as Andy Gary, Sky Sport presenter, got sacked for sexist remarks only in 2011.
