Play-by-play radio broadcasts of major collegiate and professional sporting events marked a new era for sports, despite the institutionalization of racial segregation in most." This implementation of competitive sport such as baseball and radio really brought citizens excitement and something to root for. Although race was becoming a bigger issue, baseball got Americans minds off the regular day and onto something more enjoyable.

There were many great things to come from the New Deal that have shaped America for the past quarter century. The PWAP, is not a great part. Although artist were starving as well, they were over compensated for their work and efforts while many other Americans starved. I am not saying the PWAP was a terrible program, but the pay scale was far too high with many other Americans suffering. In the New deal, I believe there should have been many programs like the PWAP to hire skilled workers to improve infrastructure throughout America with lower wages. Then, when the economy increases, start paying the employees more and more till they can find stable jobs or even start their own companies. The Social Security part of the deal has been great for Americans in aiding the unemployed, elderly, and mentally ill.

Plowing by Leo Breslau. I chose this image because it showed the typical working farmer during the hard time of the depression. The only thing to do was keep working to maintain a decent living. It also shows how far we have come. The farmer is using a horse for plowing a giant field. I work on our family farm and we just got done plowing all the fields about a month ago using tractors a hydraulic plows. Using a horse to plow all the fields probably would have took all year to do. Farming was a way to make some sort of income during the depression even though it wasn't great money.

In the article "The Art of the New Deal" it states some good points for each side. What really stood out to me was Harry Hopkins saying, "Hell they've got to eat just like other people." The quote is true, artists needed help just like many other people during this time era. The Public Works of Art Project was formed and gave about 4,000 artists jobs, that paid very well. I don't think they should have used tax payer money to pay the artists what they paid them. It was way too much money for drawing a picture. Paintings helped people get their minds off the depression but it didn't really help America overcome the great depression as much as other things. I agree with Hopkins saying they need to eat too, so creating a program for some artists is okay, but not as many as they hired and not pay them as much as they were getting paid. That money could have gone to way better programs.

Paul Benjamin: "Cross Road" I chose this piece because I truly believe it encompasses the true feeling of American life during this time period. Showing the open field and farm kind of shows how things were so much different yet still similar to the way they were during World War 1. At the time changes were happening everywhere, but places like in this piece there were things that were still the same. Seeing that contrast was very neat and it really shows an interesting perspective on life after the war.

I believe funding in the country should go to some major immediate emergencies. The new deal had so many positive effects in the past few years that it really was good for the country as a whole. The contrast to my opinion would be the fact that the arts and music would keep people from being too depressed about different things going on throughout the country. The problem with that is keeping peoples minds off of their problems isn't going to fix financial crisis around the country. So the need to be intelligent with the money that is there currently is crucial. The PWAP was a good thing for Americans overall,

Tyrone Comfort- "Gold is where you find it" I chose this because it made me think of people doing anything for money during the Great depression. The name made me think of gold as money and it being at whatever job was available. Work was so scarce during that time that if you found a job you were lucky. This also made me think of people having to deal with terrible manual labor, as either a farmer using a horse drawn plow all day like Adam said, or digging a hole to find minerals like the man in the picture.

While I do think art and music is important for the culture of our country, I agree that during a nationwide emergency, funding should be put elsewhere. It should be put into things like the new deal that will fix immediate problems. Then it should be put into other things that can help prevention and help prolong the amount of time before another crash happens. Or into things that will shorten the next crash. Especially since the taxpayers are barely scraping by, their money should go towards things that are going to help them and their children, doesn't always have to be entertainment.
