In my perfect world we would use terms like progress reports, personal knowledge checks, and S.M.A.R.T. learning goals . Students would use these tools to hold themselves accountable for their progress. The competition would be internal each student measuring progress against their previous best. My hope is that the convergence of educational technology, technology enabled content and applications that enable personalized learning may cause a seachange in the way we measure, rate, rank and judge student progress. The pilot program utilizing ALEKS to power bench-marking and progress in middle school math is one small example of what is possible.

I'm still slightly confused on my stance on grading. I do know that I don't think everything should be graded. I also want papers and long-term projects to meet mini goals so there is time to make corrections and work toward a product the student can be proud of. I want students to feel successful. I want them to feel motivated. So grades need to reflect these characteristics. I'm just not sure how to do that yet.

Maybe because I come from a journalism/PR background so I've been deadline-driven for the last 20 years, but I feel like when something is due, it's due. Obviously, there are extenuating circumstances such as sickness, a death in the family, trips, etc., but I don't like the idea of turning it in when you feel like it -- it seems to me like that's not teaching responsibility, which is part of growing up and becoming an adult. Overall, the grading policy should be transparent so there are no surprises to the students or parents, it should be objective, and should correspond to the standards that the students are supposed to learn.
