We have discussed in class on language as saying, doing and being. Language as being is related to how individuals form their identity and manifest this identity to present the self to others. In addition, the self is also shaped and influenced by the situational contexts and roles the self is in.
As individuals, let's explore some of these questions:
1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself
2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you
3) Do you have multiple identity is your lives?
4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?
5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?
*You also need to comment on at least three of your classmates posts on your views of their identity which are apparent to you.
*Be tactful, supportive and respectful when commenting on each other.
* You need to complete this task by 16/3/2020.

1) I believe that I am an absurdist. This is because I find it quite funny that people would try their best to find to seek inherent values in a universe that offers none. Due to this, people tend to see me as a tad stand-offish, usually veiling my true feelings with a thick dolloping of sarcasm and and having a rather dark sense of humour. I am also a tad idiotic, as I often show sincerity at the wrong time and at the wrong person, which ended with my further developing my misanthropic tendencies.

2) I find a kindred spirit with Effilyea and Faizan. We are a trio of people that have a rather cynical view on people albeit their stance aren't as strong as mine. We share a similar dark sense of humour although they have described my humour as bleak as an abyss.

3) Oh, most definitely. I was a run of the mill boy but I quickly developed my persona as a class clown but the thing is, nobody takes you seriously when all you did is crafting jokes after jokes. Some of my classmates actually complained that I asked them for a moment to breathe because I wasn't cracking any jokes. I developed a love for literature, especially since my sisters are both bookworms, so I ended up developing a love for literature and thus, my poet persona is born.

4) My comedic persona was developed out of necessity. I wanted to be liked by everyone in my new school. But then I developed a poet persona because I wanted to be taken seriously. It failed miserably but I soon find a kindred spirit in my English teacher, whom I later befriended. Befriending a teacher is considered a tad embarrassing, so my schoolmates shunned me even further. What really sets off my cynical side was really my turbulent home life, especially the Great Depression of 2012., where within the span of two weeks, my mother suffers a heart attack and news of my father's sordid past came back to bite the family in the ass. I find hilarious and fascinating that my mother is reduced to an infant who is constantly in tears and that people would try to bury their secrets, even though secrets will always find a way to make themselves known. I really began noticing how volatile the human condition could really when I bore witness to two of my friendships deteriorating right in front of my eyes. Two years' worth of friendship, the tireless work that I put into maintaining it, all fading into oblivion.

5) I suppose it's circumstantial. There are instances where my sensibilities would come in handy and some where it's not.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least five significant characteristics about yourself.

a. People might think I’m the most polite person when we know each other for the first time, but when they are in my close friends, I’m the craziest person who loves to make stupid jokes.

b. I’m the person who wants to win in anything, whether when we fight or in anything else.

c. I hate it when people touch my things without my permission.

e.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself.

I think I am a very sensitive and emotional person sometimes. I tend to react emotionally. For instance, when someone offended me, I will get really sulky and make a long face. I would not talk to that person and wait until my anger subsided. Other than that, I believe that I am very clumsy and careless. There were timeless time that I almost lost my purse and my phone but my friend would always be there to save me from that trouble. Next, I am a socially awkward girl. When I first meet anyone, I find it very hard for me to start and really stay in that conversation. The fact that I do not look that friendly is not helpful either. But if you start to get to know me better, I am quite an amiable and entertaining friend. I am quite relaxed and laid-back. Whenever things happen, I do not really overthink and stress on about it. Finally, I think I am a reliable person. My friends can definitely rely on me to listen to their concerns and help them whenever they need me.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you

I have checked with my housemates and my friends and all of them agreed that I do possess those identities.

3) Do you have multiple identity in your lives?

I do. I have met with many kinds of people and they have might intentionally or unintentionally ‘force’ me to behave in a certain way.

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

I guess it depends on the situation. Most of the times, I keep my own opinion to myself as I do not want my personal thoughts end up offending other people. But if I feel like that person can really accept criticism then I would try to be honest.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself

a) I could say I am a friendly person. I love to start a conversation with people, make a friend and mingle around with everyone. I learn about people really quick like what are the do’s and don’t for them just to maintain the social goods between us. Your first hi to me would be counted so you are considered to be in my circle.

b) I'm a good listener. I don’t know when it starts but I have been an adviser to people since in primary school. I think I give people a vibe that they feel comfortable to talk to me either personal matter or just their daily life activities. Believe it or not, I always give love advice to my friend and even someone who just know me. They tend to ask me for an opinion about their relationship. Do not ask me why people just open up to me naturally and I am happy if I could help them by listening to them. Well said, sometimes ones just wanted to be heard.

c) I always prioritize others feeling more than I care about my own. For me what other see in me would reflect my personality. My close friend said that I care about too many hearts until I forgot that I also have one to protect. I love to maintain social goods with people especially if they are someone I know. I would choose my word carefully before I utter it out just because I don’t want they feel offended of it. People also say that I am too kind to people even they don’t deserve it but for me, I always stick to my principle which I'm going to treat people the same as how I want to be treated and whether they are offering the same attitude or not, it is up to them.

d) They say I'm an overthinking person but in my view, they are just ignorant. Sorry about that. Sometimes I always think how a person could be to ignorance over someone feeling and only care about theirs but after I learn sociolinguistics I have my answer because if it is important or sensitive to you it can be otherwise to other. We just two different people. I often being called overthinking because I always care about ones feeling. If I greet someone and they just ignore me I would think back whether have I hurt their feeling? Did my words offend them even I did not talk to them yet? Do they react that way because of me? These are the question I always ask my self so I just ask for forgiveness first even it is not my fault and they don’t get angry at me.

e) I'm a cry baby. I easily tear up over a little thing. I tend to cry for others, yes you could say I'm a little bit weird but it is because of my empathy I guess. This is why I always say to my circle of friends ‘do not cry if you don’t want to see me cry too’ but for this kind of personality, I don’t show it to everyone because people always see me as someone really strong. I rarely shed tears in front of others. People around me say that I am too motherly even my housemate called me bunda. The truth is I heard of that since primary school and I am happy because people find me reliable and can open up to me.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you

I am a person who likes to ask people ‘how do you think of me as a person?’ and the answer I received are 90% accurate to those I listed above.

3) Do you have multiple identity is your lives?

I do, as a daughter, I would be really sensitive with my parent. Each of their words I take into the count and for that reason, my eldest sister always said that my parent will talk nicely to me because I'm the easy offended second daughter. As a sister, I'm the type of I can't offer you wealth but I have a lot of love so rely on me. As a student, here the other side of me will appear. I do take the assignment seriously because it is my marks and will affect my pointer so let's just do our work to the fullest and get an A’s. As a debater and speaker, I talk a lot so you are allowed to argue with me but please do speak with fact or just we are only wasting time

4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?

As for me, I think my parent occupation that shapes my identities. Being raised in the family of an educator make me always to act clean (read as a polite, sweet and nicest girl ever existed). There are a lot of don’t then do’s which I question it countless time back then but I am grateful that it shapes me as to how I am today.

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

Back then I'm a person who only keeps how I feel alone and just bear whatever people doing. I tend to comfort myself saying let just forgive and forget since I'm not always good to people too but now I will confront the person and have a talk to settle the misunderstanding between us because communication is the keys to every relationship.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself

I believe that I am a happy-go-lucky person. I love to make others feel happy and comfortable when they are with me. It is like I want everybody to feel happy just like I feel. Secondly, I am a funny person. The reason is that I like to make others laugh whenever they are with me so that they can forget about their problem at that particular moment. It feels so good when other people laugh at your jokes and makes them happy. Thirdly, I am a friendly person. It is my behavior to approach people even with strangers. I know it sounds creepy, but that is just how I maintain the social good in me. I want to make everyone feel very comfortable with me as they can share and talk about anything with me so that they will not feel awkward like talking about it with the others. Next, I am a talkative person. I do not know how to stop talking especially when I am with my family and friends. It is because I want to share my enthusiasm with others. Sharing my stories and perhaps my secret to them will not make me stress as I do not keep it just to myself. Lastly, I am also a complex person as I consistently challenge myself. I love to learn and like to prove myself, try new thing and get out of my comfort zone.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you.

Sometimes I like to ask others how they view me and most of the time, the way I see myself is the same as the way they view me.

3) Do you have multiple identities in your lives?

I do have multiple identities.
I am a very reserved person. I talk less and hate crowded places. I usually avoid small talk and conversation with strangers, especially when it comes from the opposite gender. I become anxious unnecessarily. My circles are small, but I usually too attached to it. Whether it is platonic, romantic, friendship, parents-children or any applicable form of love, they are just everything for me.At home, I’m quite domineering. Since I’m the eldest in my siblings, I’m likely to be in charge in everything when my parents aren’t at home. I’ve controlled nearly everything including my sister’s love life. She usually annoyed by my antics but deep down I just want the best for her.I’m also often considered as funny by my mates. I’m always eager to get the most attention when I’m with my closed friends. I always throw jokes and silly acts.I’m a keeper. I kept feelings and emotions myself. I have this crazy thought spinning around in my head that will eventually end up there even if the problem is getting worse. I just hate dealing with emotions, because in the end, even I’m winning the argument, I’ll end up hating myself for hurting others.2) My statement in question 1 was endorsed by my friends 3) Yes, I do. Interchangeably depending on situations and social circles.4) Hundred-percent sure by environment and family background 5) Manners maketh the man

5 significant characteristics
1）I am an impatience person. I cannot wait for something important for a long time. For example what to eat today, I need to get the answer quickly.
2) I am a grumpy person. I am the eldest child but yet grumpy also. The bright side is I can be angry very fast and it just wave off if I calm down.
3) A lowkey meme lover. I love meme, every kind of meme because I could find happiness when I laugh and somehow release stress.
4) A straight forward person. I like to talk with people face to face and when I feel something going on in such a way that I feel weird, I would like to know and ask more very directly.
5) An affectionate person and romance lover. I like art in any form, drawings poems, performances and more. I like to feel the aura especially romance.
Check
Some of the characteristics I have described agreed by the others but some they are quite surprise. How the others viewed me as a cute little hamster ( an innocent girl) maybe because of my height and appearance. I am a very affectionate person but the others might think that I am way more logical and particular.
Multiple Identities
I do have multiple identities in my student life. I am the eldest sister in my family, a fan club member of two celebrities, president of dance club under Chinese society and a TESL student.
Factors
Since semester 1, I am the group leader in grammar course and in assignment group I always be appointed to be a leader too. In my family I always arrange and manage routines for my parents and my younger brother. I am very used to take care and organize things for others and see them being happy under my lead. Therefore, I think my family background is a significant factor that shape me to a leader.
Negotiate self with others
I love to think and make conclusion of myself every night before I sleep. What have I done today, what it leads to, positive or negative results, am I happy with it, how about the others. I will always make positive changes on myself hoping that negotiation may begets kindness. So, next time the same situation occurs, I will be able to deal with it with a better way. However, when it is not necessary to negotiate, I don't. I will tell my opinion about what is supposed to be right and let say if we cannot agree with each other, then it's okay.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself

Greetings everyone, I am Fakhrul Aiman, and I’m going to expose the 5 significant characteristics about myself in this post. Honestly saying, some people did let me know that I looked snobbish as their first impression (or perhaps I just have a snobbish resting face) so, here I will prove that it is quite untrue. 1) I am an outgoing person in relationships, doesn’t matter among friends or families. I talks a lot to pretty much everyone I knew (perhaps too much, and, if that’s the case I’m sincerely sorry). Even though I talks too much with people and enjoy making a lot of friends, 2) I sometimes prefer to ‘be’ alone, and I obviously didn’t mean like an introvert in this context. But here’s the deal, while most of my friends enjoys convoy and riding to our hometown together, I actually beg to differ inwardly. For me it feels good to have friends, but I feel great being alone at times, too. Plus if I’m on my own I would get a great time-flexibility for myself. 3) I work well under stress. Manual labor can be pretty vicious at times, especially if you’re working in a food franchise. A food franchise I used to work in has a horrifying peak hour However, a senior colleague of mine once told me that he’s somewhat impressed by how I managed to still get things done, even if I just got a few days of workplace exposure. 4) I am a cat person. I think I develop that trait thanks to my mother’s side of the family because I personally do not know whether my dad starts loving cats before or after he met my mum. And the last one is, 5) I am terribly stubborn, once I’ve set my mind on something. While some says it’s a good thing to have a stand, but for me, who usually let others win in basically everything, I felt like it’s something I should mend before it turns into a lifetime habit.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you

I went all the way to ask some of my past time friends since they were all closer to me before and still did, and most of them agreed with everything above except for the second point. They said they never noticed this at all on me. Well if they did notice it wouldn’t be considered as ‘being alone’ am I right?

3) Do you have multiple identity in your lives?

Yes for sure I do, I am the oldest grandson, a student, a brother, a masseur and many more. To me having multiple identities are common, in fact I never knew that mono-identity is actually a thing before I look it up on the internet. I interact with different peoples differently depends on the situation, but not in a bad way. What I meant is, you can’t possibly treat your uncles and aunts like how you talk to your friends can you?

4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?

Mostly my parents, I picked up several of their behaviors such as letting others win, avoiding unnecessary thoughts and so on.

Friends, obviously. (I got influenced easily when I’m around them.)

Grandmother. (she raised me until I was 5 and I practically lived with her after my SPM)

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

I picked up the behavior of treating others differently since I was younger, so I guess it just occurs to me like “oh it’s somebody’s parents I should talk appropriately like this…”, “oh it’s just my buddy I can just be cool with him…” I don’t really see negotiation between myself and my otherness as a problem for me.

1. I am an ambivert because I behaved myself according to the situation. I can be an extrovert if someone approaches me first and he/she is a very friendly person whereby I can be an introvert if I’m not interested in that conversation. Therefore I can regulate my behaviour depends on the situation. I can be very talkative and outgoing if there’s a purpose (eg. assignment group with classmate that we just know each other) but I can be very quiet when I have to deal with strangers or people with personalities that I don’t like. I’ll remain silent and just listen to others. This shapes me a good listener because I would not interrupt others when they are talking about their problems.

2. The answers that I provided in the first question are basically how my close friends think of me.

3. Yes, I have multiple identities in my life as I mentioned earlier I am an ambivert. I can be an introvert and extrovert depends on the situation.

4. Upbringing, society and past experiences.

5. I’ll always find a fair solution. I’ll make sure that others are satisfied with anything that we argued about or worked with.

>Hello everyone. My name is "Ainul Liyana and 5 significant characteristics about myself would be the first one is I am a loner. that would sound weird, but I really like to walk alone to everywhere I go. i do not really like walking in group or having companion. Next, I have this vibe radiating that I am not a approachable person. I like to listen to music using earphone and of course will not bother anything happen near me. Third one would be, if there is a group discussion, I would be that one person who gives many ideas to contribute to the team. Forth, at home, I am the eldest of six siblings and a stubborn daughter towards my parents. Last but not least, I am currently living as a roommate with my old friend who is a good friend of mine in middle school.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you.
>As we discussed in class, there are some people were agreeing that I am an unapproachable person and some were not. However, most of them agree when I said that i like to use earphone, because maybe they always see me using it.

3) Do you have multiple identity is your lives?
>I do notice that when I entered university. I have multiples of name that different people would called me with. 'Ainul' would be for teachers or lecturers. 'Yana" would be called by my middle school friends or really close friends. last but least, new nickname 'Liya' that would be called by my university friends.

4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?
>I would say it is because of myself. I am the one who suggested what will people call me. Back in middle school, when all of my friends called me 'Yana', I would say to myself "when I entered university I want my friends to call me 'Liya' ^^).

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?
>I would say that I am comfortable when I am alone and would be totally a different person depending on the person I am socializing with.

Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself
1. I live in my own world most of the time maybe because I just don't really fancy the real world.
2. I am very clingy and I tend to get attached to people easily which somehow makes me a very sensitive person who overthinks a lot.
3. Cleanliness and manners are very important to me.
4. Good listener but not an advisor. Sometimes I just choose to not advise as it just either gets backfired or people tend to hate the way I think.
5. People say I am not an approachable person and I look snobbish most probably because I have the "I want to kill you" stare but it is just my resting face to be honest. When people get to know me, they would say that I am not at all like what they thought I would be because I mean I am a nice, friendly and caring person (that is what I would like to think of myself at least hahahaha).

Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you
Yes, the characteristics I listed were similar to how others view me. Sometimes I like to ask my friends on their first impression of me and how they perceive me, it always would be the ones that I have listed above. Maybe not many would realise the third point because I don't really show it much.

Do you have multiple identity is your lives?
Yes. I have an identity as a daughter, an older sister, a friend, a student and as a photographer.

What are among the factors which shape your identities?
I believe that the main factor that shapes my identity is the upbringing from my parents. As they say, your parents are the painters of their children's lives. Next, would be my surrounding such as the place I am at or to who I am speaking to. Lastly, would be my past experiences (both the good and bad ones). I believe that these factors definitely has shaped me to be the person I am today and has taught me a lot in life.

How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?
I think it usually depends on the situation I am in. I usually keep things to myself as I do not want to hurt or offend others which would create more problems later on. So, it is always me ignoring and moving away because I have this principle which is "it is better to shut up".

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself

a) I consider myself as a typical introvert girl
b) I tend to be shy and reserved around new people
c) However, I could be warm and outgoing around people that I'm close with
d) I am a well-organized person
e) I am emotional and sentimental

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you

Some people may say that I am arrogant and ignorant but the thing is that I'm just too shy to make the first approach. My roommate used to think that I am quiet and nerdy, but once she knew me, she would say otherwise.

3) Do you have multiple identity in your lives

Yes, I think I act differently around my family, friends and strangers. I am the most genuine when I'm with my family because I know that they won't judge me at all cost. Therefore, I could be quite clingy and childish around my family maybe due to the fact that I am the second youngest and the youngest daughter. Around my friends, I tend to be reserved a little bit. Its not that I'm not being real, it just that I am concern with their acceptance, but when I'm with my best friends, I am the sweetest and lovely I would say.

4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?

The first factor that shapes my identities is my family. I adapt my family's environment the most because I spend the whole 'identity-growing phrase' with them. The second factor that shapes my identity is environment such as friends and experiences. For example, the experience of dissapointment, rejection and expectation cause me to reveal the other side of my identity.

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

I always bear in mind that I have to be kind with others no matter what. Therefore, when it comes to negotiate the self and otherness, I put the others first instead of myself. However, when there is times that I encounter conflicts, I choose to back off, giving space and stay silent to get things settle down.

1) Think of your own identity and state at least 5 significant characteristics about yourself

a) I always talk sarcastically, sometimes people don’t know if I’m serious or not.

b) I overthink about things too much, especially about my family and personal life.

c) I’m more ambivert kind of person, sometimes I loud, sometimes I just stay quite. Depends on the energy from the social situation and also my energy.

d) I’m quite independent, I can go anywhere and do things/chores/errands alone because it’s better like that. Sometimes I feel stuffy when there are so many people.

e) I’m a caring person to people that I love, especially my family and friends.

2) Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you

I asked my friends a lot about my characteristics, and they said I have all the characteristics that I have listed. Also, they add another phrase for my characteristics which is “weird and random”. They said I love to say the weird thoughts and do the random things. I’m not sure about that but I don’t know, haha.

3) Do you have multiple
identity in your lives?

Yes. Of course I do. Everyone does. I am different when I’m with my high school friends, I’m different with my university friends, lecturers, my parents, my sister, my family and etc. I will act accordingly to the situation and the people whom I interact with. Especially with lecturers or teachers, I will tend to be more discreet and well behaved. When I’m with elderly, I will be more courteous and ladylike. I will be more of myself when I’m with my family and closest friends.

4) What are among the factors which shape your identities?

My parents, obviously. They are the first people that will teach you about how to deal with worlds. So, my mom and dad told me about how to behave as a person, as a daughter, as the eldest child to one and only little sister, as the first grandchild, as a niece, and as a neighbour. Another factor is school environment. Teachers and friends have moulded on how to be a good student and a good friend. Other identities are shaped through other social interaction such as weddings, events and etc.

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

Some people just choose to be themselves no matter what the situation is. As for me, I will think of the consequences if I’m being totatlly myself. What if I talk to elderly with the way I talk to my closest friends? What if talk to my mom with the way I talk to my teachers? I always thought of that, so basically that is how I avoid social awkwardness and uncomfortable interaction. I cannot bare to breath the cringeworthy air.

Check whether if they are similar as to how others view you.

After checking the characteristics with my friends, I could see that people do see me as an introvert and a shy person. However, those traits are only applicable when I am encountering people that I am not comfortable with. Meaning to say that I am not an introvert and a shy person among my friends but only for people that are not close to me. My friends also stated that I am actually reliable although it seems that I am too relying on other people. They told me that I am a good listener and tend to give good advices when they are having problems. Other than that, one of my friends also stated that I am a cheerful person. I do have the boring side in me but they told me that I am cheerful as I will try to cheer up my friends when they are not in a good mood.

3. What are among the factors which shape your identities?

In my opinion, the factors that shape my identity is the acceptance of certain groups of people. This is because my identity will differ according to which group of people I am currently dealing with. A simple example would be I would act differently with my parents, siblings and friends in terms of politeness. Other than that, of course my family are the ones that shaped my identity as they thought me how to deal with things according to situations and also the way they treat me in my entire life had shaped the present me.

5. But if the person that I am interacting with is someone older or someone that I just meet, I will change my identity into someone that is polite and soft spoken.

5) How do you negotiate the self and the otherness?

I always try to give a good first impression to others. I always remind myself to treat others like how you would want to be treated. As I grow up, I tend to avoid any conflicts, but if other people treat me with disrespect and when my patience reached the limit, surely my otherness will take place.
