I believe that the personality is split up into three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. The Id rules the pleasure principle whilst the superego rules the morality principle, and the ego is the mediator between the two: the reality principle. The id and superego are part of the unconscious, whilst the ego is a part of the conscious. I believe that our mind is like an iceberg and the majority of our mind is made up by our unconscious mind. Our conscious mind is like the tip of the iceberg as it is visible and we are aware of this, whereas we are not aware of the motivations behind our unconscious, suggesting that it might be more important in terms of impacting our behaviour.

These are what we use in order to avoid any kind of negative emotion that we do not want to feel. The first defence mechanism is repression which means that an individual may want to push an experience/thought out of their conscious mind. This is an unconscious mechanism that is driven by the ego. Another Defence mechanism is displacement. This involves substituting your negative emotion towards something/someone onto something else. This usually involves anger, for example if a student is annoyed because they got told off by a teacher, they might then go home and shout at their sibling in order to substitute this emotion. A final defence mechanism is Denial. This is when a person refuses to accept the reality of something and therefore, chooses to ignore this. For example, a person may choose to cope with the loss of someone by refusing to believe that they are actually gone, and therefore, they are in denial.

That is why I believe children's environments's should be a key focus promoting key opportunities for creative activities and increase chances of sublimation. Play is very significant, so much that it has given rise to play-therapy as treatments for emotional problems.

My case study on the five 5 year old boy is the main contributing evidence that my theory is based upon. I had aimed to investigate what factors could have caused his phobia of horses. From the age of three, Hans began to show an interest in 'widdlers', including his own, leading to his mother threatening to cut it off.

His fear eventually improved to only horses with black harnesses over their nose - hans father suggested it symbolised his moustache.

This clearly indicated that his fear of horses was linked to the Oedipus complex, as the horses unconsciously represented his fear of his father.

Hans did eventually overcome and resolve this conflict, as he fantasized himself with a big penis and married to his mother. This allowed him to overcome his castration anxiety and identify with his father.
