Robert J. Dalessandro (Director, U.S Army Center of Military History) in the video Life in the Trench by “History” stated, “It’s mud, it’s death, it’s rats, it’s stench and soldiers develop an attitude in a trench that everybody is going to die." This connects to the guiding question and claim because the speaker explains some of the qualities of the trenches and how soldiers felt in the trenches. The soldiers knew they were going to die eventually because they were in those trenches.

Mitch Yockelson (Historian) in the video Life in the Trench by “History" explained that “Disease ran rap it. It was very difficult to get any sort of sleep, a decent hot meal, keep your clothes dry, and more importantly to keep your sanity.” This connects to the guiding question and claim because, the Historian describes the welfare of the soldiers in the trenches. It was very loud and wet in the trenches and the soldiers were dying because of disease. Life to them in the trenches was just they’ll live for a day and could be gone the next.

As observed in the textbook, Call to Freedom, the authors Sterling Stuckey and Linda Salvucci inform us that “Most attacks began in the early morning. At daybreak, soldiers on both sides usually waited with their rifles loaded. If there was no enemy attack, they would eat breakfast and prepare for a day of listening to mortar fire." (pg.329) This connects to the guiding question and claim because it explains the daily life of the soldiers. They might battle and then prepare for the next one by cleaning up. Or they would wait for a battle to come.
