2. Trump, Zelensky and Putin reunion

What I learned this week was about Donald Trump revealing that he, along with Vladimir Putin, they want to participate in a potential peace meeting with Zelenskyy. This comes before many meetings. This was in Alaska, which Alaska was before part of Soviet Union, now Russia. Donald Tromp said in a recent interview to Fox News that there will not be U.S. troops. But some people like Kyvi and his european partners, set their alarms on after that meeting. Also, he said that he felt that there was cordiality between him and Putin. Officials had said that nothing is official or finalized yet. Trump also assured that the country will be working with all the people involved to make sure there is a durable peace in case they don't put an end to the Ukraine war. Putin already said he agrees with allowing the U.S. and European allies to offer Ukraine security guarantees, outside of formal NATO membership.

This is a challenge that are not only facing USA, Russia and Ukraine but it makes all the world feel self-conscious because this countries have a lot of power and control and their decisions affect us all. That way is how it is connected to out lives because even if Mexico is not directly part of the agreement, we are involve in other ways. Discussion have included many proposals but they are just waiting for Zelenskyy to agree. According to the times, Trump and Putin discussed Ukraine ceding parts of eastern regions and recognizing Crimea as Russia. That territorial concessions remain non-negotiable. Trump has pushed to go into straight peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire. European leaders are closely monitoring all the situation and also warning about the possible decisions that could be taken. The broader international community remains divided. As a diplomatic momentum builds, the world watches to see whether these high-level discussions will lead to ceasefire, a broader peace agreement or simply, political theater.

References:

Bermúdez, Á.
3. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie "The Danger of a Single Story"

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a powerful TED Talk Nigerian author. She talks about how an idea of a country, culture or person can lead to a full misunderstanding and change what someone thinks about it. Also, many stereotypes are taken from it.

Stories can change everything, especially from a young age, because you don't understand and know many things yet, so what you hear or see in books can create a hole idea that is unreal. Whoever controls the narrative has a big power over the people that is interested in reading about it. Normally, stories create a big part of humanize because it is about a dominant part of a group or place and if it becomes popular, more and more people are gonna read it and everyone is going to believe it. This has the consequence of flatten people's identities and creating prejudice and misunderstandings for the people that are not directly part of it. Also, this comes with many inequalities, and most of this cannot be fixed unless everyone has the possibility to experience it by themselves or get close to the real information.

During the TED talk she shares some of her personal experiences which I think is fundamental so that the public can understand a little bit more of her background and where are all her ideas and thoughts are coming from.

I find very important hearing stories from different voices because that's the only way how we can get a fuller picture of people and places. Through personal experiences and thoughtful reflection she shows us this importance. We we limit ourselves to the most repetitive narrative, we lose the chance to see all the amazing things around our world. Let's move beyond narrow perspectives and to seek out multiple stories. Only then, we can build a more open, equal and empathic world.

References:

TED.

In the past weeks we have been talking about multiculturalism, which is a topic that is so present in our lives right now and it's so important to talk about.

One question that I have been getting constantly is: how are we gonna be able to live in a world that treats us all equally when there is so much diversity and so many different opinions about everything?

My everyday life makes me think about this because I go to an incredibly diverse school where one day I could just listen to people talking in Spanish, English, French or even Chinese because there are students from all over the world. This makes me feel that we're living out the idea of multiculturalism every day. Even, a friend of mine, who is Chinese, mentioned how his life was so different when he was back in China and how, at least in my school, he has had the opportunity to met people all over the world and he feels very influenced by so many other cultures, not just the Mexican one, even though is the one that is the closest to us.

All of this had made me realize how important is the inclusion and the way we have to learn to be empathic and open with the others. We may see some of the cultures of other countries from the surface but deeper things are really happening and we need to start looking for that.

In the end, multiculturalism isn't just about shows up, it's about feeling that we truly belong but not really talking about the place but the community and the culture.

Moving forward, i would love to keep being surrounded by multiculturalism but somewhere we are all treated equally and learning to enjoy each others company and to learn about the others truth.

References:

Eagan, & L, J.
5. When Convenience Has a Cost: A Personal Look at Globalization

A topic that has been talked about in class is the Globalization. When I this about this, I think of ways how our world is becoming more interconnected thought technology, trade, culture and communication. This is also related to the multiculturalism in my opinion because in both ways I wonder if our world is becoming more equal or more divided because our differences and the competition and this is a very tough question because in my daily life I get to experience both. For example, just last week I ordered one t-shirt from a shop online of a very popular brand, and it got to my home very quickly, even though the tag said made in China and it made me though about how for class we watched a TED video and it mentioned how some factories have very poor working conditions for the workers because sometimes the work for a lot of hours and get payed really bad or how the place and the conditions in general are awful and stuff like that. This realization made me feel heavier somehow because globalization has definitely brought good things like, being able to eat sushi, have an iPhone, talk to people around the world and other things but this is kinda selfish to think because, who's really benefiting the most from globalization?

All over the world are some parts that get the good things, like cheap goods, fast shipping, global access and stuff like that, but there are some other places that eventually have to carry with the exploitation, pollution and cultural lost of the traditions, remember: The things that are convenience for some people are someone else's cost.

It's important to start using the global connections and push for fairness for everybody. Globalization is something we are all part everyday and if we start looking out for others, eventually we will be all grow for a better and equal future all together.

References:

Globalization.
6. Borders, Choices, and Humanity: Rethinking What’s 'Right' in International Relations

In our international relations unit, we explored how some countries interact with each other. This is completely necessary because that's how we get alliances, conflict solving, diplomacy and global institutions like the United Nations. This has definitely made me thought about if it's possible for a country to act in its own interest and still do what is the right thing to do? I just think that the more you think about this, the harder it gets.

I recently saw on the news how there are so many people from Ukraine that are currently refugees because of the war and I cannot image having to flee from my country just because my home isn't safe anymore. As always, there are some countries that are willing to give some support and that they open their borders while others completely turn away from them because they are protecting themselves. All this made me wonder how governments decide what's in their national interest and how other's are not getting any compassion.

There are some countries that are acting mainly out of their self-interest because they find more important protecting their economy, their power, security, etc. But on the other hand, what happens to the morality, empathy, cooperations and all the things that should be a priority too? In my case, i find myself between both because if a country doesn't see for their own goods eventually they could end up with some problems theirselves, but also, in my opinion, it's completely wrong ignoring the suffers of others just because there is a border that divides us. At the end of the day we are all humans and we all need the same things to survive and we deserve the same opportunities too.

I just think that taking neutrality is the best possible thing to do. It's time that we start to not choose sides but to help each other no matter what. I'm obviously aware that is not that simple, but at least being an informed citizen means not just accepting the truth and start moving for a new and better reality. Maybe someday, I can help shape the world doing the right thing, or at least the one that I think it would be equally better for all of us.

References:

What is international relations? | Department of International Relations.
9. Framing in the context of Social Sciences

For this week note, I choose the concept of framing, especially the way it influences how we perceive social realities. In class, we discussed how framing refers to the way information is presented and how our interpretation can change events or issues. I have grown up with the phrase: "it's not what you said but how you say it" and I completely agree with it, because of how worldview has likely been shaped not just by fact but by the way those facts were framed. Learning about framing helped me understand it on a deeper, more academic level.

Every day lots of news come out that are being seen and told from different views. Same events, from completely different frames. All of this make me realize how easy it is to form an opinion without questioning the lends through which the information is being delivered. Also, framing plays out in everyday conversations because the facts may be the same for someone but the frame changes the judgment. Most of us don't stop to question frame, especially if it aligns with what we already believe. The frame often determines what we focus on, what we ignore, and how we emotionally respond. Someone might describe a person as "lazy" for not working, while someone else might frame that same person as struggling with systemic barriers like poverty or mental health.

This topic made me more aware of my own susceptibility to framing. I think that we should all think about: What alternative frames are being left out? Who benefits from the current frame?

But, can we ever escape framing fully? Maybe not. But we should all consciously interrogate the perspectives we're consuming and presenting. Either way, This concept has definitely shifted how I engage with information, and I plan to question the frames I encounter much more closely going forward.

References:

Ceylon Moors.
7. Representation and Multicultural Actors

A topic that has been on my mind is the representation in Hollywood. Are we actually seeing some process in diversity or is it just another market trend?

In the past years we have been able to see more diverse questions on screens. Movies and shows are featuring actors from all kinds of cultural backgrounds, which is definitely a great start, but I often wonder, is this really because they are trying to be more inclusive in diversity or they want to sell more tickets?

Mostly, all of the roles that are there to play are written for non-inclusive plays, but little by little, more of diversity is getting in. The characters often feel like stereotypes like for example a spicy Latina, poor Black man, Rich blond kid, etc, but that is just a recycled image dressed in a new packaging because it is not real inclusion.

We need to start telling authentic stories that are being wrote by people from those cultures or places or that they have lived some experience close to that because if not, it is really hard to portray something you don't personally understand.

Still we can't ignore the impact of multicultural actors who had broke barriers in the industry, for example, Salma Hayek. At the beginning she was just shown as a sexy Latina, and eventually she became a producer to create her own opportunities where she had portrayed Mexican culture. She is only one of the many actors that are trying to change the rules of the game.

Si, it's Hollywood really making a progress? I think is a mix. We've come a long way but we still have a lot road ahead. I personally think that there are some things I should think about myself, because for example, sometimes I don't like when they do a film remake and they don't put the character physically the same as they were in the original film but I think that hiring actors that have different cultures is really good for inclusion purposes and maybe that way we can also change the stereotypes for the next generations. Let's keep supporting the actors who are breaking those barriers and demanding more than just surface-level inclusion.

References:

Harris, R. ’., & Knolle, S.
8. Digital Media Around the World

Something that I find very interesting but also hard to understand is: how people in different countries use digital media? Today, I will like to explore the idea of how digital platforms connect cultures and also, how they sometimes create new barriers.

Starting off with the positive aspects, social media has turned the world into a global village. You can literally watch anything you want within a second, like a documentary from Brazil, a music video from Korea, a Nigerian architecture video or a Mexican recipe. Platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram have allow to share their culture and creativity in real time to anybody at anytime. This means that exchange isn't limited to borders anymore and it's something very powerful.

From many cultures, digital media is a chance to finally have a voice, like for example, indigenous creators, immigrant communities, and underrepresented groups can tell their own stories without needing permission from big media companies. Digital media is not just entertainment - it's empowerment.

But it's not all perfect. Algorithms also push content that confirms stereotypes or causes divisions. Also, not everyone has equal access to the internet or digital tools. That creates a "digital divide" between countries and even within the same country, based on class, race, or language.

And let's not forget online hate. Through internet misunderstanding and racing is can spread very fast. So, is digital media helping us connect globally? It also bring new challenges. If we want digital media to bring us closer, we have to use it consciously, and listen to each other beyond the screen.

I would love to live in a world where there is digital connection all around the world but also where there is peace, respect and empathy in the middle.

I believe us as humans we have the power to decide what to do with the digital evolution, so let's make a better world.

References:

- Digital Media (Digital Media) - DBM FACTORY.

People talk about many different things, for example government, technology, global development and many other things, but nobody talks about how we are ignoring the way we treat animals. Animal Rights are not just about protecting our pets but it's about the world we want to build in the future. It's important to remember that animals are needed for humans to live, so we need to take care of them in order for us to survive. Although, it's not just for us but because we care about them too.

Throughout history, animals have been used for many things like clothing, experiments, entertainment, food, etc. In the past, few people questioned this because as time passed by, we all realized that animals could feel pain and emotions too. This growing awareness led to movements around the world that fight for animal rights.

For example, in India, cows are legally protected; in the European Union, animal testing for cosmetics is banned, and in many countries, factory farming is being challenged by activists and environmentalists.

Animals rights are really connected to global development because how a country treats its animals and that also reflects the level of education, empathy and protection for animals. It's awesome how much improvement have gained the countries that invest in sustainability and ethical framing because that way, they get human health and environment protection too. For example, reducing meat consumption lowers pollution and deforestation, which are major global issues.

On a deeper level, animal rights shape our identity as humans. Are we the only living beings in the world? No, humans are not the only or the most important ones. We all deserve love, protection and respect. Even if you are a human, an animal, a plant or a tree. In the end, animal rights are not just about the animals, but they also influence us, our world and our future.

11. French President Nicolas Sarkozy starts five-year prison sentence for campaign finance conspiracy!

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy entered prison for a five year sentence and that made him the first former leader of modern France to spend time behind bars.

While he was being moved to the prison complex, he was waving to his supporters as he left his house. And also, all the way was escorted by dozens of police motorbikes and vehicles.

"He was sentences to five years in jail for criminal conspiracy last month for his role in a scheme to finance his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favors".

This event is kinda historic considering the fact that is the first time something like this happens and it's a signs of how even the highest levels of government might be held accountable under the law.

This affects internal reputation, its development trajectory, and how citizens see themselves.

I found it very interesting and hopefully, other governments have the capacity to implement this and stop corruption because dishonesty is very common nowadays and it affects all countries.

References:

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy starts five-year prison sentence for campaign finance conspiracy.
12. The power of Friendships

In a world that it's always rushing forward friendships might seem like something simple, but it is actually one of the most important parts of being human. True friendships shape who we are, how we see ourselves and also how we face some challenges.

More than having someone to hang out with, it's about loyalty, trust, support, understanding and caring. A good friend is with you in the fun times but also in the hard times. The people that surrounds you also teaches you new thinks everyday and that is how it shapes your identity, and also, that is why it's a big part of your mental and emotional development.

In any time of crisis, your true friends will be there to help you out, or at least, just be there for you.

Finding true friends it's actually kinda difficult because at the end of the day we are individual humans and it's hard to always think about others and also help yourself out.

Also, social media has changed how we make and maintain friends, because nowadays we can have virtual relationships, but they obviously feel less real and are less humanitarian.

In the end, friendship reminds us of what truly makes life meaningful. Remember that the connection will always be the foundation of human identity.

13. Best Friend

I have a male best friend. We met in the third semester of high school. I joined Tec in third semester because I didn't like my previous school. When I entered, I just knew one girl, who is now my best friend, her name is Nadia. Thankfully we got a class together (more specifically History class). When we entered the classroom, she sat next a boy, his name was Rogelio. She introduced me to him, she said they had been friends since 1st semester. He and I didn't talk much, but then, Nadia left the classroom to go to the bathroom and as if it was destiny, she ran into one of her friends at the corridor so she stood outside the class for a long time, which left Rogelio and me alone in the classroom just waiting for her to return. At the beginning we were just sharing little comments like: "where is she?", "the bathroom is taking her too long", etc. We decided to call her and she said: "Wait, I'll be right back, I'm just finishing catching up with my friend", we said ok and hanged up the phone. While we wait for her, we started chatting about random things, and from that day and on, we haven't stopped talking about every stupid thing that crosses our mind.

Rogelio has become one of my best friends, in fact, he is my first real guy friend, because I grew up with the stupid idea of thinking that boys and girls cannot be just friends. He taught me that. He showed me how having fun looks like, he showed me that even if you have the worst sense of humor possible, you can still make some people smile, he also proved what a real friendship looks like after he stood with me even if I just kept yapping about the same boy (which thanks to Rogelio, that boy is now my boyfriend). He has been the person that has supported me through some of the roughest times and some days, even if he doesn't know, he has saved me in many different ways. This past year wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't for him. We've had our rough times, but I know they've made our friendship stronger and we're growing up together, so we still have tons of things to learn. I really hope everyone can find a Rogelio in their lives, just not my Rogelio, he's MY (and Nadia's) best friend and I know that our friendship is going to last forever.

"Why are they always singing and dancing?"

That is one of the most asked questions when people watch Musical Theater or even Musical movies. And honestly, every time someone asks that, I think: What do you mean "why are the always singing and dancing?", that's everything in the story.

For me, the songs and choreographies appear when the characters are going through so much and their words are not enough anymore. Their emotions overflow, and the only way they find to do it is through music, movement, and every part of their body and soul. That's what makes musical theater magical, it transforms emotions into something you can see, her, and feel all at once.

I do musical theater, and my favorite part of being in a show is when we sing and dance. Those moments make me feel alive in a way that nothing else does. When we are singing, dancing and moving all together, it's like the entire cast becomes one big heart. It's the moment when we can express ourselves completely and it's like we're exploding our maximum potencial on stage.

Also, musical theater is a special way of storytelling. A character doesn't just say "I'm sad", it sing a full heartbreaking melody about his emotions and it's so powerful because the public has the capacity to fully understand the way he is feeling. Everything is exaggerated, elevated and so amplified so that every single person in the public can feel it too.

All behind singing and dancing, there's a community and hours, months or even years, of hard work behind the scenes. All of that builds friendship that eventually feels like family. Being part of a musical isn't just performing; it's belonging.

So next time someone asks: "Why are they always singing and dancing?", maybe the real answer is: because life feels bigger when we do.

15. Guilty pleasures are more than just giving in to temptation

In today's world, we all have guilty pleasures, those foods we crave even when we probably shouldn't.

We normally treat guilty pleasures like something embarrassing or something that we need to hide. But I wish we didn't do that, because for me, food can also be seen as a way of comfort because sometimes we deal with a lot of emotions and food help us to get through hard times.

Guilty pleasures, especially when it comes to food, are like a little moment of silence between the chaos. Sometimes, It could get to feel like you are weak, but I feel that is about giving yourself a little break and a reminder that you are allowed to enjoy little things, even the small ones.

Food can be emotional, and I don't think it's bad. I think that it connect us t memories, people, places, and feelings.

For example, for me, my guilty pleasure but also my favorite thing in the world is ice cream. And it also reminds me about my childhood, even if it's cold, i feel warm and safe and super happy.

The problem is that society has taught us to feel ashamed for enjoying food too much, and something that was a source of joy became a source of guilt and fear.

Food is part of life, culture, and identity. It bring people together, makes memories stronger and sometimes, just makes your day or some hours of your day, better.

Let's stop calling them guilty pleasures, let's call them small acts of self-care.
