What an amazing attitude she has. I loved when she was talking about not staying in the office all day and doing her own work always. I also love how she executed 'eliminating excuses' throughout the school. This Ted Talk really shows the importance of our attitude toward our situation. Honestly, I'm not sure what I would do 100% if I taught at a school that "wasn't a school". I think my first focus would be on relationship building and like Linda discussed, eliminating excuses from my vocabulary.

I teared up during this Ted Talk. You could see how much she loved her school and the students through this presentation. She held high expectations for her students and eliminated all their excuses. She took a school that was a dump and made it success. It shows us how important our outlook on teaching and students is and how it can benefit the kids we teach.

I've never been part of a low income 'school that wasn't a school' but I would hope that I would treat it like Linda did and clean it up, set up those nonnegotiables, and build relationships with my students.

Alysha

I loved this TED talk! She completely turned a high school around quickly. I think this TED talk would be closely related to Paper Tigers; look it up if you haven't seen the movie or heard of it! Paper Tigers focuses on behaviors but, they are in a impoverished community.

In this situation, the best thing to start out with is set expectations and building the relationship with students. Linda did both of those things in her school and found success. She stuck to her word and didn't budge with behaviors; she also spent time with the students unlike MANY principals and administrators I have seen. The students need to know their principal and administration to be able to trust them and think of them not as a 'bad' person or the enemy.

Hilari

I really enjoyed the TED talk.
I would decorate my room to give it an inviting feeling, and I would do weekly to bi-weekly community circles within my room. Within the circle the students would learn how to have a discussion on various topics to help build community relations within the school. I would also join school committees and try to improve the school.
Tiffany

Her passion and devotion to teacher leadership and being student-centered is contagious. She took her role of principal seriously and created teams to help build up the community in the school as well as the culture. She was INVOLVED! If I was in a school that "wasn't a school", I would use all of my power to turn it into one! She took what she had and made it into something great and was able to get the school off the persistently dangerous list. She was only able to do this through resilience and dedication.

This video was very upsetting. I can't imagine being a teacher in a school that "wasn't a school," let alone be a child in one. I think the biggest thing I can do is make the children feel safe. You cannot learn if you don't feel safe. I would also make my classroom look "pretty." The hallways, cafeteria, and gym may look broken down, but while they are in my room, the decor will not be a reason for lack of learning. Another thing I would do is make my lessons were relevant to their lifestyle as possible.

Cecilia

I used this as an example of advocacy in a discussion post for another class. I thought it was moving to hear how she really tried to make her school into a community and eventually into a "school." If I taught in a school that wasn't a school, I would do my best to ensure that my students and any students I interacted knew that they were safe and loved. I would offer my classroom as a place where they could come and talk about whatever is bothering them. This is actually what I do now because our school can be kinda scary sometimes.

I had goosebumps the entire video. Linda is an inspiration and the students she has impacted are forever changed. She took her own experiences and connected with her students, teaching them to believe in themselves.
I think sometimes it is hard, because as a teacher you do not want to cross a professional line, but at times, you want them child to know how they can relate to you and you understand them. One of my student teaching placements was in Peoria in a 3rd-6th grade ED classroom with 9 boys from the South End. They saved meals and put them in backpacks so they could feed their families, and school was not on the top priority list for them. However, once they respected you, anything was possible and those boys impacted my life forever, The slogan SO What? Now What? Should be embedded in every school. Poverty is not going away and not getting better. Instead of excuses what and how do we change as teachers.

As someone who formerly taught in a low-income school, I had personal background knowledge of what she was talking about. When I was in that situation, I made the most of what I had. I didn't have a lot of materials, resources or extra hands, so I just made it work. I like how Linda said that the students in her school wanted to feel special... in my experience that is most definitely true, so I made that my mission every day!
