Ponyboy's Motivation

Ponyboy’s motivation is his want to be accepted by Darry. This is shown when he runs from Darry, because he feels like he’s not accepted by Darry, or that he’s not “good enough”. He runs because he feels that if he’s not accepted, he won’t or can’t stay there. It’s also shown when he gets super emotional and hugs Darry after he comes back from the church, because he realizes that Darry is crying, and figures out that Darry loves him. That makes him finally feel accepted. His motivation is when Pony says this about Darry: “I don’t care about Darry. I was still lying and I knew it. I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me”(17). This shows his want for acceptance because he lies to himself and says that he doesn’t care about Darry, but he does, and just wants acceptance.

Ponyboy’s strengths are that he cares about other people, almost to the extent of being too much, and that he is very loyal. His caring about other people is shown when he saves the children from the church, risking his own life in the process. His loyalty is shown when he fights with the gang when he’s still recovering from the events of the church, needing to take 5 aspirins to fight. A quote from the book that shows his loyalty is “‘I don’t know if you ought to be in this rumble, Pony.’, Darry said slowly. Oh no, I thought in mortal fear. I’ve got to be in it. Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs”(114). This shows POny’s loyalty to the gang because the most important thing in the world is helping his gang out, as opposed to making sure he’s healthy.

Ponyboy’s fault is that he is really spacey at times and gets distracted by things like movies. This is shown when he has trouble at the end of the book with his schoolwork, because he can’t stop thinking about Johnny and the church. It’s also shown when he absentmindedly drifts off to sleep in the park. An excerpt from the book that shows Pony’s spaciness is “I like to watch movies undisturbed so that I can get into them and live them with the actors”(1). That shows his spaciness because he forgets about everything else and just lives in the movie.

Ponyboy's Character analysis

Ponyboy is the protagonist of the Outsiders, because he is the main character, and the story is told from his point of view. He is a dynamic character because he changes over time. He is a round character because he has a lot of personality traits, like his loyalty to the gang, his want to be accepted by Darry, and his want to help others. His want to help others is shown when he saves the children from the burning church. The fact that shows he is a dynamic character is shown as he changes from the sweet person that wouldn’t hurt a fly at the start to when he threatens to hurt the Socs with the broken bottle at the end. The fact that he changes over time is shown by this conversation between Two-Bit and Pony: “‘You really would have used that bottle, wouldn’t you?’ Two-Bit had been watching from the store doorway. ‘Steve and me were backing you, but I guess we didn’t need to. You really would’ve cut them up, huh?’ ‘I guess so,’ I said with a sigh”(146). This shows that Pony changed over the book because he wouldn’t have actually hurt anyone at the start, even if they were threatening him.

Ponyboy's Personality Test

Ponyboy’s personality is a mediator. He has a high risk of being misunderstood, but he really connects with people like himself. He is perceived as quiet or shy, but has an inner passion that is huge. The connecting with people like himself is shown in the book by the fact that he is good friends with Johnny, who is quiet like him. Ponyboy’s personality test also says that he is creative. This is shown when he loses himself in movies and books, using his creativity to live them with the characters. An excerpt from the book that shows he connects with people like himself is “Two-Bit always said he wondered why Johnny and I were such good buddies. ‘You must make such interestin' conversation,’ he'd say, cocking one eyebrow, ‘you keepin' your mouth shut and Johnny not sayin' anything.’ But Johnny and I understood each other without saying anything”(34). This shows that Ponyboy connects with people like himself because he feels a real connection with Johnny, who doesn’t talk a lot, just like Pony.
