Chapter 4 of Awakening the Sleeping Giant talks about how we perceive ourselves as teacher leaders in our schools, but also how we perceive other educators and their roles at our schools. Many times differences in opinions or attitudes can deter teachers from speaking up or taking action in their schools, or can impact the atmosphere of the school altogether. However, the authors Katzenmeyer and Moller suggest, "teacher leaders learn to articulate and acknowledge the differences that exist, rather than ignoring them." How do the differences in teacher attitudes, styles, viewpoints, and experiences influence your school leadership as a whole? Is it a positive influence?

Chapter 5 of Awakening the Sleeping Giant is about ways that schools can develop a context for teacher leadership effectively. Katzenmeyer and Moller explain that, “one of the most frequently mentioned problems with organizational structures is that teachers don’t have time in the school day for collaboration and leadership activities” (p. 94). Think about your school day. Is there time set aside each day, or most days, for you to have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow teachers and engage in leadership roles or opportunities? If so, how has this had an impact on you as an educator and on your students?

At my school I am struggling with leadership roles right now because our staff morale is not the best it has been over the years. It seems like personal and professional lives/matters have caused a lot of negative vibes and it makes it very difficult to want to step into roles. Opinions are taking personal instead of as a suggestion to possibly make things better. I stepped out a leadership role because I didn't feel that it was effective or that I had a purpose and I would rather spend my time doing something more productive. Chapter 4 talks about teaching philosophy and I think it's important to have your own but also shape your philosophy as you grow and develop professionally. Your philosophy should embody your beliefs and values and create a vision for your teaching.

ch 5 Our school has a weekly PLT that happens an hour before school. My school also has a monthly SIP meeting ,PBIS meeting, and two leadership meetings. These roles are filled by whoever is willing take the role for each grade level. From my experience when I had leadership roles I did not feel like it was a good use of my time or impacted our school norms classroom.I enjoy or PLT meetings because the focus is always our students and the agenda is fit to the needs and outcomes of our students, not what the county tells us we have to talk about.
