What I knew before the module

Painting for me has always been a hidden passion of mine. Growing up, my mom put me into Art classes. I graduated from oil pastels then succeeded with the next level which was painting on paper, then canvas, and later on, many more materials to paint on. I was very thrilled to be tackling the module on Painting because I always get excited whenever a topic on painting was discussed because it aided me to rekindle my love for the different paintings and artists I look up to. I thought I knew many things already and was confident I was ahead of my classmates because of my art background. I was very familiar and found very basic to me the different materials such as watercolor, oil, acrylic, etc. I also knew the different subjects such as still life, portraits, landscapes, etc. Some of which I've already made myself. (See picture of 100 portraits of 100 Iconic people of the world, watercolor painting on oslo paper, that I made during the year 2018). Surprisingly, I thought I knew it all. I was shocked that I only knew the technical side of painting. Luckily, the module helped me see further the beauty and meaning into painting and by discovering many more remarkable artists and their works.

What I learned from the module

I'd like to say I underestimated what I was expecting at the beginning of this module. Maybe this was because I already thought I had the idea of what painting meant and was, I was wrong. I learned so many new things such as the renaissance period being the start of it all. This was the period of creativity and age of discovery. I learned that high renaissance period had their own stylisitic traits which were having a balance and harmony amongst the painting. It really didnt have a mannerist style. We also discussed the many different artists of that time and their works (See pictures) The First picture I placed above is my all time favourite. The very famous, The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, a classic. The next two pictures I placed are two paintings I've seen for the first time. I can't fan girl enough of its beauty. These are the Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci and The School of Athens by Raphael. These two paintings we discussed in class and I learned to appreciate the style that these two paintings have. The culture of the Renaissance period is highly evident. I also learned new terms such as fresco which is a certain type of mural painting that is executed upon freshly laid plaster. The painting becomes an integral part of the wall which most of the paintings we discussed were frescos. Aside, the analogies of how these two were said in the videos we watched I came to a realization on how even until now these paintings live until today because of the significance and importance it has marked before.
