Delivery Unit (Ward 64) - Can be found on the second floor of Saint Mary's Hospital. The ward consists of 20 delivery rooms, 4 of which are for high dependency care and 2 that are specialised for bereavement care including Room 1 and the Rainbow Room. Whilst providing HDU care there is an allocated HDU nurse to support tasks and care on delivery unit.

On shift there should be two coordinators, TC1 to coordinate rooms 1-10 for admissions and TC2 to coordinate rooms 11-20 for ongoing inductions. Room 11 is our only birth pool room on the unit and is ideal for Midwifery Led Care.

On Delivery Unit you can also approach the DU Education Links - Beth Billingsley and Phoebe Bailey. They will be able to support with supervision of skills and try to facilitate regular meetings with you during your delivery unit rotation.

Antenatal Ward 65-

Found on the second floor opposite ward 66. This ward consists of a 28 bedded antenatal ward of four bays each with 4 beds, 12 single rooms for antenatal admissions and allocated for induction of labour. We can accommodate up to 6 inductions per day as well as outpatient inductions.

Postnatal Ward 66-

This is found next to ward 65 on the second floor. Ward 66 is a 28 bedded postnatal ward of four bays each with 4 beds and 12 single rooms. Also has an In-reach team room and Milk room for sterilising equipment.

Postnatal Ward 47b-

Ward 47b can be found on the third floor in SMH. It is a 28 bedded postnatal ward of five bays each with 4 beds. There are 8 single rooms on this ward. This used to be a beautiful MLC birth unit up until a few years ago, so you may find some rooms have birthing pools. The Infant Feeding Midwives can also be found on this ward as well as the Education Team.

ERP- Consists of 2 four bedded bays on Delivery Unit, these are allocated for patients who are on the Enhanced Care Pathway. Enhanced care pathway involves patients who have had a low risk Caesarean Section, the pathway encourages a 24 hour discharge for Mother and baby.

AAU- This ward is now based on ward 63, the ward primarily conducts outpatient appointments involving Ferrinject administration, fetal well-being scans and ELCS pre op appointments. There are 4 Consulting rooms and 1 large scan room.

Triage Ward 64a- This is SMH triage unit for emergency attendances and reviews, it has recently expanded and taken over the old AAU unit. The ward consists of 1 triage room, 10 beds and 1 scan room for obstetric reviews, there is now fetal surveillance on the unit which is an exciting new feature!

Delivery Suite Facilities, Theatre and Recovery.

The Unit has 9 delivery rooms; including a pool room, 3 enhanced maternal care rooms for mothers with complicated pregnancies, a dedicated bereavement labour room, 4 recovery beds and there are two Obstetric Theatres situated within the Delivery Suite area and 24 hour on-site support from the anaesthetic department.

Delivery suite theatres are located on delivery suite, on the same corridor as the scrub change room, recovery and the anaesthetic office. There are 2 theatres, one of which is latex free.

Recovery takes place in a four bedded area just off the theatre corridor. It is the recovery nurse who will recovers the woman from the anaesthetic and operation.

Manchester Birth Centre

The Midwife Led Birth Centre is a co-located unit within the main Maternity Unit at Wythenshawe. Low risk women who are booked under Midwife Led Care and are admitted in spontaneous labour at term will be admitted to the Birth Centre and cared for holistically. Place of delivery should have ideally been discussed prior to the onset of labour, whilst making a birth plan.

It has 5 pool rooms and is staffed by midwives and maternity support workers (MSW). The 5 rooms are comfortably furnished and provide birth pools and birthing aids presented in a non-clinical environment. The lamps and lighting can be adjusted to create the type of atmosphere that the woman and her birthing partner’s desire. The impact of a homely environment is known to positively affect the birth experience.

Ward C2 Facilities, including Enhanced Recovery.

Ward C2 is situated on the first floor adjacent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This is a 21 bedded postnatal ward. It is split into one bay of 2 beds, 6 private en-suite side rooms, a family room (for longer stay patients) and three 4 bedded bays. The ward is split into 3 coloured ‘zones’, each with 7 beds. Every shift you will be allocated to a zone and will care for these women throughout your day. The ward is usually staffed with a shift co-ordinator (Band 6 midwife), a NIPE midwife, 3 midwives (band 5s and 6s), an advanced practitioner who works with TCU babies and two maternity support workers. Uniform must be worn in adherence to uniform protocol.

The ward also has a Transitional Care Unit which provides care to higher risk neonates. You will care for these babies whilst being supported by a band 4 assistant practitioner. You should try and gain some experience working in TCU to familiarise yourself with the protocols and care of higher risk neonates. There is a folder by TCU that contains all of the neonatal guidelines and information that you will need whilst you are caring for babies on C2.

Enhanced Recovery Bay is an 8 bedded ward situated within the postnatal ward, which contains 2 four bedded bays. Women attend the Enhanced Recovery Bay for a pre-operative appointment two days before their elective surgery. And those women who remain on the enhanced recovery pathway will be recovered and discharged from here 24hours after their elective c/s.

Ward C3 Facilities

The Antenatal Ward is situated on the 2nd floor and has 12 beds This area also has a bereavement suite (the Snowdrop Room) which contains a a private kitchen and bathroom. The ward is staffed by at least one Band 6 midwife and ideally two others. At least one maternity support worker is usually rota’d onto a shift.

Antenatal Clinic (ANC)

There are two Antenatal Clinics based at Wythenshawe and Trafford. Wythenshawe Antenatal Clinic is adjacent to the Obstetric Ultrasound Department; there are Consultant clinic sessions and Midwife clinic sessions held daily.

Community Midwifery Service

There are 3 teams of community midwives covering areas in South Manchester and Trafford.

Community midwifery services are integrated within the midwifery unit. Working in teams, we offer integrated midwifery care for the mothers of South Manchester and Trafford. The community midwifery services are led by the Community Manager.

| Team | Area covered | Team Leader | Telephone Number

| Gaskell | Woodhouse Park, Northenden & Benchill- based at Wythenshawe Hospital | Emma Axon | 07824058296

| Pankhurst | Altrincham/Timperley, Sale, Urmston and Partington- based at Trafford General Hospital. | Louise Nelson and Karla Roberts | 07854979534

| Seacole | Chorlton and Didsbury- based at Wythenshawe Hospital | Lisa Robinson | 07974249130

Styal Midwife | Melanie Ballard

Triage

Triage is a four bedded assessment area situated near the Birth Centre and main reception. Antenatal Assessment Unit shares an office with triage to share clerks and support staff. Triage is staffed by two midwives (one is always a band 6) and a maternity support worker.

The triage unit will review pregnant women from 16/40 gestation until 6/52 postnatal. It runs on self referral and referrals from community midwives when needed.

Antenatal Assessment Unit

AAU is also located near the birth centre and is next to triage. AAU & triage share an office space. There are 3 beds and an area where women can be scanned by a midwife sonographer.

AAU runs on an appointment system but women can also be referred in from their community midwife or for a review after having a scan.

There are many reasons women may need to attend the AAU some include for blood pressure profiles, CTG monitoring, management of obstetric cholestasis and for scan reviews, outpatient induction of labour, ferinject IVI and for ECV.

Neonatal Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is self-contained within the maternity department opposite ward C2. It provides level 2 care, meaning the maternity unit accepts in-utero transfers from 27 weeks gestation. We occasionally transfer women below 27 weeks gestation out to other hospitals accompanied by a midwife.

Gynaecology Service

Saint Mary’s @ Wythenshawe also has an emergency gynaecology service which consists of Ward F16, Emergency Gynaecology Unit (EGU) and a daily pre-op clinic.

EGU is an acute gynaecology service which follows an Emergency Department model of care.

F16 is and in-patient ward caring for women experiencing a wide range of gynaecology conditions such as early pregnancy complications or acute non-pregnant gynaecology conditions.
