In June 2008, Casey who lived at home with her parents and her daughter got into a major arguement with her mother. This caused Casey to leave their home, taking her daughter Caylee with her. With Casey's Parenting abilities coming into question, her mother Cindy continuessly called to check on her granddaughter and Casey insisted she was okay.
In July, a towing company contacted Caseys parents saying her car was in the yard and when they picked up the car, they found caseys purse, caylees toys and car seat and a horrible smell in the trunk. After discovering her car, her parents demanded answers which casued Casey to confess that her daughter had been missing for 31 days and that it was her nanny that took her. With Casey's story not adding up, she quickly became a suspect in the disappearance of her daughter.

The transgressed norms in this case were mainly formal norms that were violated because Casey broke the law. The jury found Casey not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse. Although, she was found guilty on four counts of providing false information to law enforcement authorities and was sentenced to four years in jail and $4,000 in fines. However, Casey was also labelled as a pathological liar by her friends and family, as she often lied about many things in her life such as failing classes. This norm would be more informal as she was not breaking law by lying about the classes she was failing to her parents but, it is still crossing the line when you are lying and keeping secrets.

Although Casey was found not guilty, the case was never solved. I personally beileve Casey knows what happen to her daughter despite the lack of evidence. She barely shed a tear the entire time everyone was searching for her daughter for months. She was also caught partying at clubs, laughing, and having a good time within those months. As an outsider looking in on this case, a lot of the evidence does point to Casey. An air test was conducted in her car and it found that there was human remains decomposing in her trunk at some point but they could never prove Casey was responsible for that. The fact that she waited 31 days to report Caylee missing is also a big red flag to me that she must know something. I find the lack of justice for Caylee in this case very frustrating.

I chose Casey Anthony for this assignment because I tend to get very invested in missing children cases. I chose this case specifically because it reminded me of the Madeleine McCann case. Madeleine went missing while her and her family were on vacation. Her case was never solved nor was a body ever found so her case remains a mystery. What makes these cases similar is the parents of these children. Both Casey and Madeleines parents showed major signs of neglect with stone cold looks on their face and they both hardly shed a tear in live interviews or 911 calls regarding their children

The Labelling Theory

Casey recieved a lot of labels when her case was ungoing. The public called her a bad parent, a murderer, a liar and so much more. This situation represents the labelling theory. The labeling theory has potential to be a good method in solving this case because the public put a lot of pressure on Casey and the prosecutors to get to the bottom of this case by labelling Casey as a murderer. This method could possibly do some damage to the suspect as well. Since Casey was proven guitly despite what people think about her, the constant labelling from the public can become very degrading and hurtful especially when its for a crime you did not commit.

I personally think Casey is responisble for the death of her daughter becasue of the evidence that was found. Here I have a few pieces of evidence I think point to Casey;
A website that talks about chloroform was searched on Caseys computer at home although, Cindy(Casey's mother) took responsibility for the search while taking the stand, chloroform was found in the trunk of Casey's car. Around the time Caylee was reported missing, Casey was seen getting a tattoo that says "Bella Vita," which means "beautiful life" in Italian. For someone going through a parents worst nightmare to get "beautiful life" tattooed on them is pretty alarming

This case recieved an insane uproar from the public because just like me, many other people around the world believed Casey was guitly and that she got off easy. People of the public and the media were furious at the not guilty verdict. The aftermath of Casey's trial inspired bills in several states for "Caylee's Law". This law would make it a felony for a parent or legal guardian to not report a missing child. The Florida governor Rick Scott signed a Caylee's Law bill in 2012. Although Caylee did not recieve the justice she deserves, the public did not give up easy and continued to say her name. This led to ultimately getting a bill signed in her name which could possibly prevent months of searching for evidence that has already been covered up for a period of time.

The Strain Theory

Casey was 19 years old when she became pregnant with Caylee and she hid the fact that she was pregnant from her parents for months. One of Casey's friends said that she had talked about possibly giving the baby up for adoption but she was convinced not to by her mother Cindy. The fact that she was 19 years old considering putting caylee up for adoption and the constant partying was a good indication that maybe Casey didnt want to be a mother. I believe its unreasonable to force someone to want a be a parent when they obviously dont want to be. This represents the strain theory because Casey lacked ways to socially be accepted as a mother. When implying this theory to this case, it could have helped the prosecutors realize the neglected parenting Casey was providing to her daughter.
