After inspecting and experimenting with them and seeing their performance Bowerman scheduled a meeting. To Phil's surprise Bowerman asked to be in on the deal, 50/50 ownership he asked. It was an easy decision for Phil though, first off because Bowerman was a shoe fanatic, he knew how to improve them and could come up with newer and better styles. Plus as the coach at Oregon he could give some tigers to his players and show them off for advertisement purposes and show their quality as they race. So they met with Bowerman's lawyer , Jaqua , and decided that Bowerman didn't want to be in charge so they agreed on 41% Bowerman and 49% Phil . She was very shy though, she didn't want to ever answer questions and kept her head down a lot. One day Phil asks her if she wants a job , to work for blue ribbon which she agrees to. After awhile they start hanging out more going to bars and going out to lunch until Phil finally asks her out. She said yes, Her and Phil had an amazing summer and went on many dates, but according to the Portland state University a teacher cannot DATE a student so Phil had to ask her the big question. He didn't have a creative way to ask in fact it was kinda sad. A lot of changes had to come though, first off their apartment was too small so they would have to invest in house, second they had to figure out how to take care of a baby and have the best for it , also Phil had to figure out a way to balance Blue ribbon, a pregnant wife, and make time for his baby when delivered. About 9 months later Penny went for a check up and the doctor said about a week more so she went to the office to get some shipments off and told Phil she doesn't feel good and he knew it was time, he rushed well he tried to go as quick as possible to the hospital. So he bent the rules and made other types of shoes like basketball and casual shoes but not running, because then he would break his and Onitsuka's contract and end up being sued. He didn't know how or why he had woke up to it but he knew that that had to be the name. So he went into the office early and told Phil and the team about it and what they thought. Everybody liked it except for Phil , he stuck with Dimension Six but everyone else hated it and he didn't have much of a choice because of his time constraint, so Nike it was. Plus when in Japan he visited the temple of Athena Nike. When he first got Phil knew he was gonna get sued in Japan so to counteract he'd have to sue in America for breach of contract and trademark infringement. He hired a lawyer, a big one, by the name of Cousin Houser. Mainly choosing him because of poverty, and Houser was willing to do it for free. Houser thought of quitting multiple times because of how much it costed without him getting paid. Phil was put into practice for the big day to practice how to avoid saying things and how to act when they twisted his answers into something else and try to break him.  When the day arrived, April 14, 1974, Phil could not be more nervous, everyone couldn't have. It was really  a make or break deal for Phil because if he lost he just had a small factory to produce shoes and he'd lose an enormous amount of money. Onitsuka had five lawyers supporting him against Phil's one. Onitsuka's lawyer, Hilliard, began and stated how Phil "conned" Onitsuka by false claiming his "Business" Blue Ribbon that never existed. Phil blew it as a witness but Bowerman was even worse, he hadn't practiced at all and was just winging it, sweaty from being nervous, not knowing what and what not to say, he was a train wreck. Kitami was next but he had a translator, yet he spoke fluent English. Weeks later the Judge called in for the ruling. He rules Phil and Blue Ribbon win, the most relieved Phil has ever experienced, he says Phil's team had more data evidence and facts to support them and "truthfulness", he didn't how much to believe of Kitami's statement because he had a translator yet he kept correcting his English. Phil clueless, asked what's going on and find out all their checks had been bounced.They had quick thinking and resolved the problem by Giampietro got a loan of five thousand dollars and paid the workers. To make matters worse the bank called and asked for a visit. Phil and Hayes on one side of the table with Holland on the other. Holland says something that would give Phil nightmares, he says " this bank doesn't want to support your business anymore" (p.262-263). On top of that when Phil got home that night Penny said that Holland had rang and told to call. Holland was surprised that he wanted to pay off the full thing whn he replied with "The full..." (p.272). Phil and Blue ribbon could not of been more relieved. Pre ended up pulling through and taking the win with 13:23.8 which was only 1.6 seconds off his best.There was a victory party at Hollister's house but Phil and Penny couldn't make it because they had a 2 hour drive back home to their kids, so they said their goodbyes and left. The next morning right before dawn Phil woke up to a call, he answered, to his surprise it was the Bank of California, why would the bank be calling in the middle of the night Phil asked himself. He responded with "Damnit, we don't bank with you anymore-- you kicked us out"(p.279). Unfortunately he wasn't calling about money, he was calling because he heard that Pre was dead. This couldn't be true, it had to be a prank Phil had just saw Pre a few hours ago. He immediately called Hollister who had the same reaction Phil did, he said "I'll call you back in a minute" (p.279). Minutes later when Hollister called back he was sobbing. Pre drove Shorter home and a few minutes later he'd lost control of his car after "hitting some kind of boulder on the road.The car spun high into the air and Pre flew out. He landed on his back and his MG (his car) came crashing down onto his chest."(p.279). Obviously voting for Shorter, as he was the last person to see Pre, he was almost carrying on Pre's torch. Shorter was wearing NIke's but so were two other runners,Craig virgin, and Garry Bjorklund. The starting gun went off, all bunched tight the runners were inches of eachother. Entering the final lap Shorter and Virgin were in front. Phil and Penny jumping up and down yelling "we're going to get two... We're gonna get two!". And then coming out of nowhere Bjorklund plunged ahead of Bill Rodgers and finished third. One night in 1977 the Houston Rockets were playing the Los Angeles Lakers. One of the biggest fights broke out in NBA history between Kevin Kunnert and Washington. Tomjanovich came running over to help his teammate out but in instinct Washington turned and threw a hay maker breaking Tomjanovich's nose and jaw. The sound echoed throughout the stadium , Tomjanovish laying there in his own puddle of blood. Phil didn't know anything about it until he called his father that night. Phil always called his dad before going to bed to catch up with everything. That night his dad was telling him all about the fight but then he said "Oh, Buck, Buck, (buck is what his dad called him) it was one of the most incredible things i'd ever seen, the camera kept zooming in and you could quite clearly see Tomjanovich's shoes... the swoosh! They went on the road to sell potential investors on the worthiness of the product, the company, and their brand. The date for the offering was December 2, 1980. Kuhn, Loeb (an investment company) was recommending 20 dollars per share, Too low Phil thought.Phil decided on $22 a share, the highest amount, no negotiations. Hayes had to figure out a way to persuade them to give in to it. Over the phone they tried to negotiate it down to 21.50$, but Phil said "Gentleman,twenty-to is our number"(p.358) with the reply "I'm sorry I'll have to call you back". (p.358) They waited 5 minutes, o ring, 10 minutes, no ring, after 15 minutes the phone finally rang, sweat rolling down Hayes forehead, he answered, "Gentleman" ,(p.358) they said, "we have a deal. We'll send it out to market this Friday."(p.358) Phil drove home the kids in the yard playing and Penny in the Kitchen. That night he told the kids their nightly story and then went to bed.
