As a group, we chose 3 different charities, food bank, Women’s Aid, SIFA Fire Side. We then contacted the charities to see what they needed and collected donations to support them. In doing this, we learned to work individually, sending formal emails and making posters. We also worked in teams and learned how to use good communication skills. We enjoyed interacting with the public and making posters and getting to know each other as a team. We feel we worked well together; learning new skills as we go.

The whole fund raising event built our confidence in so many ways. We gained new skills, for example sending formal emails. We learnt about different kinds of charities that are out there to help in our local community. We used computers and got good IT knowledge out of it.

We organised a charity event to raise money for a charity called MIND. We sold cakes and savoury food and raised about £100. By doing this, we had a taster of volunteer work and how to organise our own fundraising event. The benefits for all of us are that we feel more confident in our ability and have improved our work skills.

We organised an awareness event on 8th December 2016 to highlight of Women’s Aid and the support they offer. We believe working together as a team and supporting each other is the key to a successful event. We had an incredible wealth of talent in our class and, we hope we have inspired other groups of English learners to do similar thing. Many learners at our learning centre expressed a wish to be like us. This gave us all a fantastic boost to our confidence.

There were many benefits as some individuals took on roles that increased their confidence. One member of the class, who is shy, was the main contact for Women’s Aid and arranged for a representative to come to Saltley and view the video we had produced and to see the phenomenal amount of donations we had received.

Taking part in a role play for the first time and seeing the reaction of the audience when they watched the video was amazing, it showed how well we had performed and how some of the audience were moved by our message(some to tears) . We also further demonstrated our IT skills by producing posters to advertise the event, donations needed, facts and statistics and the quiz we chose for the attendees to take part in.

Finally, taking part in this event helped our work skills in the form of presenting ideas and being persuasive. Two people from our class went to every other class at Saltley to advertise the event and encourage people to attend. Our tutor, received some very positive comments about how professional we were.

We organised a health and wellbeing event to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We organised guided walk around Aston (including Aston Hall and Villa Park), demonstrated exercises that you can do at your desk and we had a sale of healthy snacks.

We learned how to organise events, write formal letters, to book the place where we were holding the event, we made formal presentations to other classes, created posters to advertise the event and promotional leaflets to sell things that we made. What we enjoyed most was working as part of a team for one common purpose, improving confidence in presenting things to unknown people and lots of IT skills.

We organised an event on 29th November for two charities which are Refugee Action and Acorns Hospice. In two hours we raised £533 by selling food, books and jewellery. Although we’ve never organised a charity event before we very much enjoyed planning and organising the event.

There was great team work, everybody was very motivated and enthusiastic to plan and organised a memorable event. The food we’d prepared grabbed customer’s attention before our planned time, so we set up early and managed that. We had a large number of savouries and sweets along with pink tea which gave people variety to choose from and overall was very successful.

We had our table top sale on Thursday 17th November and we raised a total of £285.38 plus two collecting tins, which was more than we had expected.

Everyone contributed and helped to make our event a success. The team work was excellent due to the fact that everyone played their part. It was supported by staff, students and visitors alike because it was publicised two weeks in advance by eye catching posters and leaflets that we’d produced. We made sure we started on time and finished on time which meant we then had time to tidy up and count the takings. Our prices were reasonable which meant the food sold quickly. Our planning and teamwork was good.

We held a charity event for Winston’s wish who help support bereaved children.
I learnt that communication is important when organising things; particularly listening to others. I learnt how to organise and prepare efficiently. I enjoyed interacting with people I work with and meeting new people. As a result of taking part in this event, I gained better listening skills and teamwork skills.

To raise money for a local charity (Winston’s Wish) we sold a variety of cakes, hot drinks, chocolates, and sweets. We also sold clothes, shoes and jewellery at reasonable prices. We managed to raise £323 within 2 hours. By doing this event I learned that everybody and anybody can raise funds for charities. I enjoyed it a lot.

This year I have returned to study after six years of not doing anything. Taking part in this helped me to improve my confidence, IT skills and my work skills.

There were a number of factors contributing to the success of our event. First and foremost was that the whole event was a team effort, without team work an event cannot be a success. We all did our bit, we brought in things both new and pre loved. There were food items both sweet and savoury. The samosas were a big hit with everyone! Not forgetting the delicious cakes and cupcakes. We contacted our Local Tesco Express and they kindly donated cartons of drinks. We kept prices reasonable and also offered a “Meal Deal” as we knew many staff and students would require lunch. Everything began and ended on time, the response from staff, students and the general public was wonderful, they all came and supported the event.

The event was very successful raising £319.30 within 2 hours. All the students in my class made a massive effort organising different tables to raise funds for their chosen charities. We all know hard work pays off and it definitely did in our case. I am very proud of all my classmates. The effort and work put into the event was remarkable. Each person in my class did something they were comfortable with. They brought their own life skills to the event. A very well done to everyone in my class on this triumphant occasion. It has boosted our confidence in our own abilities.
