The Flex Model

The disruptive model I am choosing to comment on is the Flex Model. I feel the pros are: a) Students work at their own pace on their own terms. The students are working in the same room and one student can be on 7th grade math level and another can be in the 3rd grade math level; this is fabulous because the students are working on the content they are understanding and I feel the student who struggles, probably feels successful on the level they are learning and the gifted student does not get bored with the material he/she already knows. b) The teacher can walk around the room and have mini-conversations with students on where they are and what is their progress – I feel the teacher will have more time to do one-on-one conferring with students. The cons could be: a) budgets for computers and quality online resources that can keep kids working at their own levels otherwise the teacher will need to find online resources that are free, except that is very limited – usually there are many online resources that are free, but when you want the data to go with it, there is a fee to pay. b) There needs to be reliable Wi-Fi and/or internet service for all students to be on at the same time. Sometimes when many students are on at the same time, the internet is so slow or does not work.

I'd like to comment on the flex model. I think the pros are that students are able to:
1. Learn at their own pace
2. Choose their content
3. Still receive support that is necessary....
4. Have more ownership in their learning
Another pro is that teachers are freed from whole group instruction and can become facilitators/coaches.

The cons are:
1. Lots of sitting/not a lot of movement
2. Accountability for students
3. Creating the lessons
4. Cost of technology/software (although maybe offset by lack of textbooks?

Pros:
Differentiated instruction - in a traditional sense
Student autonomy - working at their own pace, etc.
Seems like it could off load some of the work done by the teacher to an online source (lesson planning, grading, etc). I actually see this as a "con" but some would see it as a pro.

Cons:
Still using mostly traditional teaching methods (direct instruction), it's just moved to a computer screen instead of coming from a teacher. And the textbook is just online instead of in a book.
Student engagement - I noticed in the video example of the Touchstone Academy, which was the model school for this, students were working on what looked like iReady lessons. My experience with these types of online lessons is that students mostly find them boring and un-motivating (as they do with direct instruction in a classroom). The presentation of the material itself is not particularly engaging, regardless of whether it aligns with their current level of understanding or not.
Lack of engagement with peers. A big part of learning is to engage with ideas of others. In fact, one of the Mathematical Practices is to "construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others". I don't see much of this happening in this model. Unless you do it in some sort of online forum. Which, in particular for mathematics, is not very effective (yet) because of the need for notation, etc.

Pros: Students still attended regular classroom and interact with peers with individual and group learning.
Self paced on areas that they excel at. Can get caught up on there own time in areas that they might be behind in our lack interest. Depending on the online program instant data tracking is also a bonus as you can adjust student learning on a more individual basis.
Cons: I feel that the biggest in con in all of the models is that they are only as good as the online programing. They are also only as good as the teacher that is trained in how to integrate or implement the online curriculum.
