Geothermal energy is heat that comes from inside Earth. In some places, such as Iceland, the heat is so close to the surface it can be easily used as an energy-source. In other places holes must be drilled down through rocks to reach the heat. Geothermal energy is harnessed for cooking, bathing, space heating, electrical power generation, and other uses.
Real life example
It is when earth’s heat comes from the interior of the earth and we take the heat to make energy or electricity

A fossil fuel is a natural substance formed from the buried remains of ancient organisms that can be used as a source of energy. Fossil fuels formed over millions of years as heat and pressure from layers of sediment changed the decayed organic remains into materials such as coal and petroleum. The energy in fossil fuels is the energy from sunlight stored in the tissues of the buried organisms.
Real life example
Fossil fuels is when coal is turned into energy.

biofuel, any fuel that is derived from biomass—that is, plant material or animal waste. Since such feedstock material can be replenished readily, biofuel is considered to be a source of renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas. Biofuel is perceived by its advocates as a cost-effective and environmentally benign alternative to petroleum and other fossil fuels, particularly within the context of rising petroleum prices and increased concern over the contributions made by fossil fuels to global warming. Many critics express concerns about the scope of the expansion of certain biofuels because of the economic and environmental costs associated with the refining process and the removal of vast areas of arable land from food production.

Real life example

Biofuel is the fuel we use to drive cars, trains, and even jets.

At the beginning of the 21st century, about 80 percent of the world’s energy supply was derived from fossil fuels, most notably coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Fossil fuels are finite resources, however. This means that they are available on Earth only in limited supplies and will run out one day. Fossil fuels also add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere when they are burned. Scientists believe that this contributes to global warming. Burning fossil fuels also adds other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, to the atmosphere.

Real life example

Solar power is an alternative energy source. Coal and gasoline are not alternative energy sources.
