Then he would be transferred to a labor camp on Sheroka Street in Minsk. When he was in the camp he and other planned an escape plan where they would team up with the Partisans to fight the Nazis. On October 14th, 1943 he and others attacked 10 SS soldiers and killed them, then using their weapons they fought off other soldiers and freed half of the 600 inmates. In the beginning after Peter and Anne got rid of the star, Peter goes to the stove and Anne asks what Peter was going to do with it and Peter says, "Burn It" (458). This quotation shows an act of resistance when Peter took the star off. This shows an act of resistance because when Peter was burning the star, he was indicating he was not going to be controlled by the Nazis. This quotation is telling the reader to stand up against something that is not right. When Pechersky was put into the Sobibor extermination camp, he and other inmates escaped, “Shortly afterward the camp was dismantled. Pechersky and a group of his comrades succeeded in escaping and reaching the Soviet Partisans” (encyclopedia). This quotation demonstrates that Pechersky was an upstander. When Pechersky was in Sobibor camp, he planned a revolt with other inmates They attacked the German soldiers, taking their weapons and 50 inmates escaped Sobibor Camp. The reader of this event is being taught that when things seem unfair and not right is to stand up against the oppressor. It shows the individual is an upstander rather than a bystander. During the Holocaust, Alexander Pechersky was an upstander.

Since Martin was a bystander when the oppressor came for the other victims, no one stood up for Martin when he was take, "Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me" If Martin was a upstander from the start when people were first being take away, it could of changed a lot of things. In addition, since no one was trying to resist the oppressor, the oppressor kept coming back multiple times to take people. Also the oppressor was taking only certain people at a time, and the other people did not think they were going to be taken away.
