Demonstration of empathy

At the end of the day, with the continual evolution of technology, I always find myself having a deeper appreciation for empathy.

One time, the director led the way by having his kid (a teenager no less) say hi to us; he followed up by saying that “I know it gets chaotic at home; so, if your kid or parent or pet needs to be around you, that is fine. If you feel safer to turn off your camera, drop me a note so I can understand your situation better. If you need to turn your avatar on, just go ahead.”

Or another session where, after a back-to-back 3h intensive PD, we were tasked to show 1 item in our home that we loved having with us while we work + we all took turns to share. We actually learnt more about each other + then subsequent sessions, we checked in on each other. So, what was meant to be a mental break, turned out to be a bonding session instead.

In this video, the speaker, Tim Urban, beautifully described how the humans are actually procrastinating every single thing, especially the students. He showed an example of a monkey (which is our mind), how does it jump from one thought to another, when we wanted to focus on something. Many examples like these, actually made me watch the entire video.

Online Classes that Motivated Me.

I don't think I've ever had a motivating online classroom. During the pandemic, I've only had one last semester of classes to get through, and most of my lecturers were unaware of the full potential of online teaching. They simply adapted their F2F approach to an online environment, which to me wasn't enough to keep the interest most of the time. Interestingly, the only time I was motivated and interested in an online learning experience was in person, with the use of Kahoot quizzes and friendly competition to promote learning and assimilating the contents of the class.

A fun quiz

Quizzes are no doubt one of the most engaging forms of content for an online class (or any class) but when the professor designs the class to integrate with the quiz, and adds some team spirit to the quiz, it really adds a level of engagement and fun that isn't normally seen in an online class.

I think I was so captivated because for the first time during lockdown I had felt an actual desire to log into my laptop and attend a lecture, instead of the regular attitude of just "sitting through" one.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I think engagement is really important -- and i liked Kahoot too. It gave a sense of "community" in a healthy competition kinda way. Gamifying a boring lesson into a fun competitive one. :)

gahh. that must have been pretty horrible. But tbf to the teachers, they must have been pretty new to online teaching + figuring out how to work out their new roles. Here's to better learning experiences for our students + may we adapt to the educationary evolution well!

I was really motivated by a TED Talk by Dr. Amy Cuddy about body language. She explained how our posture can actually change how we feel and how others see us. Her talk was simple, clear, and filled with real-life examples, making it easy to understand and apply. The idea that small changes in how we stand or sit can boost our confidence really stuck with me. It was inspiring and gave me practical tips I could use right away.
