Many parts of the story convey ideas of alienation and detachment. In the story Gregor was physically getting pushed back, away from his family. His father “had merely the fixed idea of driving Gregor back into his room as quickly as possible.” (Pg. 310). His father also locked the door so he could not escape. His father actions, not caring that Gregor turned into a bug, showed that he did not a an attachment to Gregor. He was also starting to become alienated from humanity as he tried to communicate to his family but “in all likelihood, would again be unintelligible” (Pg. 308). One of the founding principles of humanity is being able to communicate with each other, without that skill he feels as if he is not human anymore. Greta unintentionally alienated him from humanity as she had “his room emptied of furnishing...but at the price of shedding simultaneously all recollection of his human background.” (Pg.325). This tells the reader that he is being alienated from humanity by removing all things in his room that represents humanity. It also conveys that Greta no longer thinks of Gregor as a human but only a bug.

In this part, Gregor is starting change into this bug-like-creature (becoming detached), due to how Gregor and his family sees himself. In the beginning of his changing, his family is a little worried for him, but as time goes on he starts to be alienated from his family.. His family starts to do this to him because he isn’t that pleasant to see, and his family didn’t have that much for him to start out with. So the main point of this section is that he starts to reflect a bug, because of his internal feelings from his surroundings and his family.

Gregor faces alienation, isolation, uncertainty, detachment, and despair when he becomes sick. He becomes a burden to his family. In some societies even today family members are pressured to provide for their families, If they become ill they are cast away. We should always take care of the people we love no matter what happens to them.

Many modernists believe that early twentieth-century life was characterized by a

sense of uncertainty, alienation, detachment, and despair, much of this is shown in Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis. In Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa wakes up one day with a bug like body, with small weak legs, and many other bug like similarities, and a family that doesn't love him anymore. Gregor’s transformation is symbolic of these feelings.
